The book is unlike other studies in combining an extensive typological survey with detailed phonetic analysis of many languages. The finding that the widely studied phenomenon of syllable weight is not a unified phenomenon, contrary to the established view, is a significant result for the field of theoretical phonology. The book is also an important contribution to the field of phonetically-driven phonology, since it establishes a close link between the phonology of weight and various quantitative phonetic parameters.

About the Author
Percy Lubbock, (1879-1965) was an English man of letters, known as an essayist, critic and biographer. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. He won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 1922, with his memoir of childhood summer holidays at Earlham Hall in Norfolk. He became an �migr�, and lived in Gli Scafari on the Gulf of Spezia. Towards the end of his life he went blind. Remarkably well-placed socially, his intellectual connections included E. M. Forster, a Cambridge contemporary, Edith Wharton (a member of her Inner Circle from about 1906), Howard Sturgis and Bernard Berenson. He reviewed, anonymously in the columns of the Times Literary Supplement, significant modern novels including Forster's Howard's End. His 1921 book The Craft of Fiction ('the official textbook of the Modernist aesthetics of indirection') became a straw man for writers including Virginia Woolf and Graham Greene, who disagreed with his rather formalist view of the novel. Among his other works: Samuel Pepys (1909), A Book of English Prose (1913) and Shades of Eton (1929).

This, like E. M. Forster's "Aspects of the Novel," is an essential work of criticism, and it's nice to see it back in print. Lubbock's outlook is an extension of Henry James's. He is more immediately accessible than the Master, and he illustrates the "craft" by reference to classic novels such as Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," Thackeray's "Vanity Fair," and of course James's own works, particularly "The Ambassadors." Lubbock, Forster, F. R. Leavis's "The Great Tradition," and Ian Watt's "Rise of the Novel" give you what you need to know if you want to understand the central canon in Anglo-American and European fiction.

A major work of literary criticism

Lubbock 's subject is the craft-of- fiction and he looks at work of Flaubert, Henry James, and Tolstoy in order to teach the tricks of the trade. Much of what he speaks about concerns point- of- view and much about the virtue of 'showing' rather than 'telling'. In one of the work's defining passages he writes, ".. the art of fiction does not begin until the novelist thinks of the story as a matter to be shown, to be so exhibited that it will tell itself To hand over the reader the facts of the story merely as so much information- this is no more than to state the 'argument' of the book... The book is not a row of facts, it is a single image; the facts have no validity in themselves. It is not the simple art of narrative, but the comprehensive art of fiction that I am considering' and in fiction there can be no appeal to any authority outside the book itself."

For Lubbock the consummate master of the techniques of 'showing' is James. And a central part of the work is devoted to analysis of the technique of 'the master'.

Well glad the mother was able to talk some sense in to Maureen. She was hurting her son by keeping him away from his dad she was no saint she cheated and I'm sure he didn't rape her while they were married time goes by and I'm sure they have matured some he has found his life partner in kate. This is what I was missing from their last book but now with this it's PERFECT! Thank you S.E. Lund for a great series. I'm so happy Maureen finally warmed up to Liam knowing his father. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, I'm sad this is the end of Drake and Kate but this book made it more acceptable. About the Author
JEREMY P. SHAPIRO, PhD, is a clinical child psychologist and an adjunct faculty member in the Psychology Department and Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, where he teaches courses in child and adolescent psychology, assessment, and therapy. Dr. Shapiro's research focuses on psychotherapy processes and outcomes and treatment of aggression. He has published numerous articles and presented many professional workshops on these topics, and his violence prevention program, called Peacemakers, has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

ROBERT D. FRIEDBERG, PhD, ABPP, is an Associate Professor and Director of the Postdoctoral Fellowship programs at Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center/Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Friedberg is board certified in cognitive and behavior therapy, a Founding Fellow in the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and a recent Extramural Scholar at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research. He has published four other books including Clinical Practice of Cognitive Therapy with Children and Adolescents (with J. McClure).

KAREN K. BARDENSTEIN, PhD, received her doctorate from the University of Michigan. She is a Clinical Instructor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University. She has coauthored a book on personality disorders in children and adolescents. Her practice specializes in childhood disorders, personality assessment, divorce, and custody issues, as well as psychotherapy for adults and couples.

Amazingly well-written and useful!

This book is by far the most comprehensive and useful child therapy text. It is thorough yet concise on many child therapy topics. It is supremely helpful for new clinical graduate students and as an outstanding broad and detailed review for clinicians and researchers. We used this book as a text in child didactic therapy practicum course, and all the students and professor found the chapters informative and a pleasure to read. The book includes careful, comprehensive reviews of outcome research along with insightful guidance about combining research findings and clinical reasoning to individualize therapy for each client.

Interesting and Informative

I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive, covering the main theoretical orientations and the common diagnostic categories. It integrates the science and art of therapy by providing user-friendly summaries of outcome research with clinically practical instruction in how to work with kids. The critical case materials and examples of therapeutically useful words to use with children in a variety of clinical situations are very helpful. I was pleased by the lively and interesting writing and inspired by the satisfaction that can be achieved in this work.

Useful and thorough

This is a comprehensive set of books for the magician. Actually, there are eight volumes in the entire set, totaling over 3300 pages, but only the first seven are from the same publisher, and so if you get this, you'll be missing the final volume and probably have to pay another fifty dollars if you want it.

I wouldn't want to try to learn magic from this. Probably DVDs are a better way to learn in any case. But for looking up stuff, this is great as an encyclopedia of tricks. Of course, do not fool yourself into thinking that it has everything, but it sure does have a huge number of standard and non-standard tricks and illusions. And as a guide to learning magic, it does have a genuine magician's approach, meaning that one needs to practice drills involving body position, movement, and sleight-of -hand techniques that can be used for a variety of tricks.

I never cease to be amazed at how well a magic trick works if it is performed as planned. Sure, people could see what you did, they should see what you did, but if you do it right, they generally won't. Even professional magicians can be "fooled" by some variety of a sleight-of-hand trick they haven't seen before: they may know what you did afterwards, but they often will not see you actually do it. In many cases, a reason is that tricks are planned so that the audience will not know exactly what the effect will be and will be tricked about when the real action is actually taking place.

Excited Naked Female

This story is the best written piece in this category since How Sarah Became a Nudist. It starts out simple enough, a girl goes to a beach in a bikini thinking the most daring she is going to be today is that she's wearign a skimpy thong that shows her butt and she has no back-up, no clothes, no towel. For two chapters it's tame beach bikini fun, and then she decides to try skinny-dipping and leave her bikini under a rock. Then it gets washed away and she is stranded trying to find her way home totally nude. It impressed me because unlike the other erotica I read, this did not get bogged down in sexuality or masturbation and instead focused on the real humorous adventure of a girl stuck naked and trying to get home without getting caught. In fact there's an interesting part where she ends up in a sex shop and punishes the owner for selling kiddie porn by burning it down, she's actually kind of a hero at that point. The whole thing remains somewhat plausible and realisitic and fun without being any dirtier than it needs to be, and that is refereshing when most of the stories just seem to indulge in vulgarities. it'sjust really nice to have some light hearted fun.

Not great, but has its moments

This book has its moments. The story of a girl who loses her swimsuit in the ocean and has to negotiate her way home naked is fairly well written and gave me a few chuckles. I especially liked the part where she tries to hide in plain sight by standing still and pretending to be a nude statue at a museum. However, the plot is slow going for the first couple of chapters, and the girl's criminal activity is somewhat offputting. I can excuse the petty thefts in her dire situation. But arson crosses the line for me, even if the intended target is a bad guy. That's a felony that risks other innocent lives. At that point, I'm no longer sympathetic to the girl.

There are better ENF stories out there. I'd recommend "Perfect Streak" and "Naked in School: Photoshoot" in that order for those who are looking for a fun read about girls who lose their clothes in public. Then, if you still want more of the same genre, this one isn't bad.

About the Author
Joel Feinberg (Professor Emeritus, late of University of Arizona) was widely recognized as one of America's leading political and social philosophers. Acclaimed both for his ground-breaking scholarship and his exemplary teaching skills, Feinberg published widely on topics such as individual rights, legal theory, capital punishment, the treatment of the mentally ill, civil disobedience, and environmental ethics. Before joining the University of Arizona faculty, he taught at Brown, Princeton, and Rockefeller universities. Feinberg was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1987-88 to work in Japan and served as chairman of the National Board of Officers in the American Philosophical Association in the mid-1980s. Some of the royalties from Reason and Responsibility have been used to establish the Regents Professor Joel Feinberg Dissertation Fellowship in Philosophy at the University of Arizona.

This is absolutely the best book there is on distinguishing between offense and actual harm. Anybody interested in how speech gets construed as harm--hate speech, trigger warnings especially--should pay close attention.
