I have loved everything this author has put out, but this series is my favorite by far. I have been counting down the days for the release and it did not disappoint. Just the right mixture of mystery, romance, and adventure.

I really enjoy this series. The writer is excellent at making you really care about these characters. There is little to no romance but what there is adds to the storyline. With each book I am more curious about our main characters back stories and their abilities. It's another series that just keeps getting better and better.

Modern paraphrase of ancient classic

Tao Te Ching is ancient, now a couple of millenia in print. Stephen Mitchell has not translated this classic, but rather has paraphrased it -- as he admits in the Foreward. But he is a Zen student of a couple of decades and has good insight into the Zen of the Tao (Zen Buddhism is Buddhism heavily dosed with Taoism).

Mitchell's version of the Tao Te Ching is very, even extremely, modern. Perhaps to the point of being "politically correct." However, he does have a way with words and this is a very readable version of the Tao. To show how modern it is, let's take an example and compare his version of the beginning of chapter 46 with two other versions:

- Mitchell
"When a country is in harmony with the Tao,
the factories make trucks and tractors.
When a country goes counter to the Tao,
warheads are stockpiled outside the cities."

- Victor Mair
"When the Way prevails under heaven,
swift horses are relegated to fertilizing fields.
When the Way does not prevail under heaven,
war-horses breed in the suburbs."

- Addiss & Lombardo
"With TAO under heaven
Stray horses fertilze the fields.
Without TAO under heaven,
Warhorses are bred at the frontier."

Obviously, there were no factories, trucks, tractors, or warheads in ancient China. So, Mitchell is providing a modern interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, while Mair as well as Addiss & Lombardo are closer to a literal translation (which is not possible however, because the Chinese language and the English language are so completely different from one another.)

None of this is to find fault with Stephen Mitchell. This is just to say that his book cannot be definitive, because it is less literal and not really a translation. However it is good, compelling reading, and honestly makes no pretense of being a literal translation. If you like Mitchell's approach, get one of the more literal translations too. I bet Stephen Mitchell himself would like you to have both.

When my wife Sandy was diagnosed with terminal cancer, this is the ONE book she kept nearby at home and in the hospital. She found great comfort in it words and wisdom.
When she died I picked it up and began to read. Several passages fell right open (8 & 16). These were the passages that she must have been reading the most. So I read those passages at her funeral. I'm still reading this book and finding something new with each reading. Even if a passage may not make sense on the first or second reading, it may become clear by the fifth or sixth. Or maybe it will take years.
Sandy was a poet and teacher who studied many translations of the Tao, but this was her favorite. It may not be the most literal translation, but it surely is the most poetic. If this translation was good enough for her, then it's good enough for me.
In fact, this book is so good, I've given away at least 8 copies in the two months since her death. This book has helped me deal with and survive the most difficult time in my life. I'm much wiser and more open having read this book. My friends to whom I've given copies agree and are sharing it with their friends.

As good as it gets, considering "the way resembles nothing"

I've been using this translation since 1965 and have found no better. When I want to clarify something, I struggle with a Chinese language edition - my knowledge of Chinese is sufficient to know at least the 'raw' meaning of the characters. Some thoughts and discoveries I've had...

1. D.C.Lau's translation comes closest to the actual Chinese most of the time.

2. I believe he does not consider himself a Taoist, and thus brings less 'pro' bias to his translation. Many other translations (not all) I've seen are written by 'pro Tao' folks who, to one degree or another, unconsciously bend their translations to agree with the 20th century cultural paradigm (values) in which they were conditioned.

3. It is not what a particular translation says, or how it says it, that is 'enlightening'. How you interpret what you read (hear or see) reflects who you really are at that moment. In other words, what you perceive the book to say is actually your own mind's reality. The notion that one translation or another is going to impart 'knowing' is wishful thinking. The knowing lies in the eye of the beholder. Thus, the disclaimer in chapter 1 of the Tao Te Ching, "The way that can be spoken of is not the constant way; The name that can be named, is not the constant name." This sentiment speaks to just how very inward and personal a Taoist journey is. For me, D.C.Lau's translation gets in the way of this journey less than others I've seen over the years.

Epic ending to an epic love story

I received a reviewer's copy of this book from Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's release day launch promotions.If there were two fictional people who deserved an epic ending, it would definitely be Talia and Sebastian. This conclusion to their love story is every bit what fans of this series would love. I am sure that everyone who has followed this series will absolutely love the ending. And if you haven't read the first two books, the you should do so right away because you would have missed out on a good part of your life as a reader if you haven't read them.
More than the love story, Blackest Red shows the growth and development of the main characters. They are now so different from how they were when the series started. But it's a good kind of different. It's the kind of different that comes with maturity. I freaking loved it.

From the very beginning, the chemistry between the hero and the heroine was undeniable. In this book, their love for each other was so strong, it sounds so realistic, like they were two real people who've had difficult lives and hard times but have found the greatest love in each other.

That thing that Sebastian did at the end? It was so sweet that it makes me wish I had someone like him. We all long for that once in a lifetime kind of love in our lives. We find it easier to get that in fiction. That's why we love books. Blackest Red not only gives us that satisfaction, it also takes us for a ride, one that will never be easy to forget.

Outside looking in...

Sebastian and Talia light up the pages with their dynamic chemistry and this final book in the series finds their pasts connecting in ways they couldn't imagine. Sebastian is an alpha male with a tender heart and a medical condition that makes him vulnerable. Talia has devastating secrets in her past that shape her independent nature.

Although the story is great, the ending left me wanting.
1. When Talia discovers her father, I felt left standing outside on the sidewalk, hoping to know what she will do with this information.
2. Sebastian has yearned since he was a child to discover what happened with his mother's killing, only to "slap" the hands of the person responsible....there had to be another way for this to play out, after all the venom in his heart about this situation, for so many years. Maybe a freak accident or lightning strike. This venomous character needs to go down, it isn't enough to threaten her.
3. Talia's aunt reveals her part in breaking up Talia's engagement and that she was the fire starter.....she finds no repercussion.
4. What happened to poor Nathan? Did he learn about the stalker?

The loose ends to the story are woven into a cohesive knot,...but with gaps. Love how the relationship leads to a proposal....would love to see the red diamond ring!

Seb & Talia for the win!

What I really just want to say is that I can't believe this series is now over ... I'm just not ready to say good-bye to Talia and Sebastian.

I was so quickly captivated by this series, when I picked up the first book, Mister Black, there's mystery, suspense, major anticipation of the unknown and oh the steaminess! The chemistry between Talia and Seb is unbelievable, it'll definitely leaving you wanting more!

Anyways, Blackest Red ... where shall I begin? It was everything that I hoped for, this book was a bit of a run around since a certain someone kept trying to runaway. I definitely got where she was coming from, but come on, runaway from Sebastian?! That's the unthinkable, girl you be trippin'! I loved that Seb constantly fought for her and kept reminding her why they belong together indefinitely. Their chemistry is off the charts and you'll love every moment they're together.

I'm so sad that this series has to end, I want more of Seb and Talia! Their story is very intriguing and moves along so well; there's never a dull moment. I got everything that I was hoping for and I'd be happy if you ever felt like writing more about them! *ahem ... cough cough*

Sorry that this review was a complete ramble, but it was hard to put words together to form actual sentences. It just sounded like a bunch of garb in my head ... hehe! But I think readers won't be disappointed in this series, it was such a great conclusion! Well done, P.T.!
