spen Pittman has produced various versions of The Tube Amp Book over the years -- this is the 1991, a 703 page trade paperback weighting in at a little over two pounds.

Reviews for the "deluxe and revised" edition mention that the image quality on schematics is poor. I can report that you won't be knocked senseless by the stunning 1991 graphic quality of the illustrations in this version, but they're all reproduced well.

Illustrations: about 400 pp of schematics, about 50 b&w illustrations (many of them vintage photos or ads), and 48 pp of color illustrations which are full-on vintage guitar porn of "couples" (guitars and amps.)

Highlighting Sixty Years of My Favorite Disney Character!
By Monty Moonlight
The Walt Disney Treasures collections have expanded into the world of Disney comics, and how great is that?!!! "Walt Disney Treasures: Uncle Scrooge, A Little Something Special" is the second volume of these fine new paperback collections sure to thrill fans of both the Disney Treasures DVDs and Disney comics alike. Here, we have 8 collected tales of my favorite Disney character, Scrooge McDuck, the richest duck in the world, uncle to Donald Duck, and the true face of Disney's comic book legacy, the other world of Disney that many self-proclaimed Disney fanatics aren't even aware of.

This 160 page collection opens with an editorial about Scrooge's origin and his portrayal in comics both in the States and abroad, with insight into the stories chosen for inclusion in this collection. Then comes the first story, 1954's "The Seven Cities of Cibola", a true classic tale from the Duck-Man himself, Carl Barks, creator of Scrooge and many of the characters in his world. In this tale, Scrooge, worried that life is becoming stale without a new enterprise to take under his wing, is thrilled to be introduced to arrowhead collecting by Donald and the boys (Huey, Dewey, and Louie). Even with 3 cubic acres of money, 50 cents per arrowhead found is too good a deal for Scrooge to pass up! While searching though, he and his nephews end up on the trail of bigger treasure, that of the legendary Seven Cities. Just their luck, however, that the Beagle Boys would happen to be listening in on their plans to go after it.

The second story in the collection was written 10 years later by Carl Fallberg, and is presented in its complete version here for the first time in North America. "Getting that Healthy, Wealthy Feeling" once again depicts Scrooge in a lackluster mood, as he feels his wealth is coming too easy and misses the hard work of earning a dime. This leads him to put Donald in charge of his fortune in the hope that separation and hard work will revitalize him. But Scrooge's plan goes awry when his money-making "luck" seems to dissipate without being able to touch his lucky dime. As editor David Gerstein points out, the story presents both the best and worst aspects of the period. It seems that other writers taking on Scrooge at times would misunderstand the concept of the lucky dime, turning him into a superstitious character in their stories and the dime into a magic talisman.

Story three is "Daisy Duck's Diary - Witness Persecution", an Italian story from 1966 by Romano Scarpa. A car crash, a hair growth formula, an expert legal analysis, and most significantly, the romantic pursuit of Scrooge by Brigitta MacBridge, make for a fun tale with fanciful art from overseas. These Italian Disney comics stories are a great treat for the American fans who get to meet completely new and wacky characters when we are presented with translated versions.

Story number four is "The Money Ocean", a highly imaginative tale from Italy, 1974. This Marco Rota tale depicts Scrooge as having several money bins and in a fret over their security. Donald prompts Scrooge to create one massive bin, and the result is an ocean of money with plenty of new ways to play with it, thanks to inventor Gyro Gearloose's help. But their's something sinister about the waves.

Our fifth story is the Danish "Pipe Dreams", published in 1980 and written by Brian Claxton and Tom Anderson. This two-part story is a charming if simple reunion between Scrooge and his old flame, Glittering Goldie.

Story six is a DuckTales adventure from 1989, "Windfall on Mount G'Zoontight", written by John Lustig with art by William Van Horn. I remember when Van Horn first came on the Disney comics scene, and I must admit, I was not a big fan of his whimsical style. I've grown accustomed to it though, and this story is typical of the slightly oddball duck stories his illustrations are usually attached to (perhaps they were all Lustig's? I don't recall). In this one, Scrooge, Launchpad, and Huey, Dewey, and Louie find themselves on an expedition to find the treasure of a mysterious, mountain-dwelling being called the Williwallawa.

The seventh, and one of the finest stories in this collection, is Don Rosa's 1997 "A Little Something Special". This special birthday story is not a mere tale of Scrooge's 50th anniversary in Duckburg, but also of a scheme by Scrooge's greatest nemeses banding together in something of a Legion of Doom fashion. Could've made for a great animated feature, like many stories from Rosa, and of course Barks, if only Disney had turned to their comics for the direct-to-video animation market instead of making sequels that could only look poor next to their feature film originals. Anyway, if there's one thing you should notice when reading a book like this, it's that the true masters of the duck comics are Carl Barks (naturally) and Don Rosa (who followed Barks' story style and take on Scrooge and his world more truly than anyone else).

Finally, after a brief and touching editorial, comes the story to round out this look at Scrooge and his legacy, the Danish "Whatever Happened to Scrooge McDuck", from 2006, written by Lars Jensen. This well-chosen tale shows the ducks of the future looking back on how Magica De Spell finally got Scrooge's number one dime, how Scrooge disappeared soon after, and the events that followed. But don't worry, it has a happy ending and Scrooge's adventures manage to continue as usual.

"Walt Disney Treasures: Uncle Scrooge, A Little Something Special" is both a treat for the longtime Scrooge fan and a great introduction for those new to Mr. McDuck and his legend. If you have any interest in exploring this character beyond the wonderful television series "DuckTales", this is a great place to start. Of course, "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" and its companion are also excellent to give you the full McDuck story, and there are many, many other comic books and collections out there, including a couple of collections specifically featuring the Carl Barks stories that inspired some of the best DuckTales episodes ever. And, of course, there are Scrooge's other animated moments besides the TV series DuckTales and its bigscreen movie. Scrooge can also be seen in Mickey's Once and Twice Upon a Christmas direct-to-video movies, Mickey's Christmas Carol, the still-not-on-DVD-in-North-America "Sport Goofy in Soccermania", and Scrooge's as yet unreleased-to-DVD screen debut, the fantastic short "Scrooge McDuck and Money". Though, even before that he could be seen as part of the animated opening to the original Mickey Mouse Club, and Scrooge also has appeared on Mickey's House of Mouse and in cameos on other Disney animated shows, like "Raw Toonage". So, do yourself a favor and get into the fantastically rich world of one of Disney's finest characters and a true Disney legend in the comic book medium, Scrooge McDuck, the richest duck in the world!

Everyman's Rich Man
By Brent R. Swanson
If Mickey Mouse embodies the Horatio Alger myth in animated cartoons, then Uncle Scrooge McDuck fulfills something of the same role in comic books, with a slight twist: McDuck is what becomes of the Alger character when he makes his fortune.

While Mickey became the trademark, and some would say the "lure," of the Disney empire, Uncle Scrooge became the delight of Disney comic book readers, his ever-growing and troublesome fortune taking readers to all corners of the world and mythology. It helped that McDuck was the creation of Carl Barks, whose stories had already become the favorites in the "Comics & Stories" and "Donald Duck" titles.

"Treasures" series editor David Gerstein has wisely chosen a Barks classic, the "Seven Cities of Cibola" story, to lead-off this collection. Barks defined the character and set the standard for both the stories and the artwork. The stories that follow provide an interesting and entertaining cross-section of American and European takes on the McDuck mythos. Readers who have been away from comics for awhile may be surprised that so thoroughly American a character (despite the Dickensian shadings)has taken on such epic popularity abroad. "The Money Ocean" is a beautifully realized story from Italy's Marco Rota, known only to a handful of American fans until a decade or so back.

Other worthy artists represented here include Tony Strobl (with Carl Fallberg), William Van Horn (with John Lustig), and modern maverick Don Rosa, who wrote and drew "disguised" Uncle Scrooge adventures before breaking into Disney comics in the '80s. One story, "Getting That Healthy, Wealthy Feeling," has been restored to its original length, an extra-mile effort to be expected of editor Gerstein, who has also had a hand in the Disney Treasures DVD series.

Having read through this volume, I'm still convinced that nobody has done a better job than Barks with his creation. But Scrooge McDuck has provided a wealth of inspiration for all the storytellers that have followed Barks, and the riches go to the readers.

A more focused collection than the first Walt Disney Treasures
By J. R. Boress
Maybe this is an obvious, uh, observation, but this collection is much more focused than the first Walt Disney Treasures volume. That collection, while enjoyable, tried to cover so much ground that its contents would probably seem like a bizarre mishmash to anyone not already familiar with Disney comics. (I am speaking somewhat of myself here.)

This volume, with its focus on Uncle Scrooge, allows a reader to get to know each character a little bit better because it doesn't jump around so much. The stories are all fun and the collection includes selections from a variety of creators rather than just Carl Barks or Don Rosa. I enjoyed reading these somewhat different takes on Scrooge. The capstone story of the book, "Whatever Happened to Scrooge McDuck" is a winner. The author found a way to wrap up the lifetime of Scrooge McDuck while still leaving the impression that the old duck's adventures will last forever.

After reading two of these Walt Disney Treasures volumes, the feeling that I get is that these stories are meant to whet the appetite rather than to satisfly. Unlike the Treasures DVDs, neither of these volumes are comprehensive or definitive. So, know what you're getting if you purchase it: not a chronological, all encompassing collection of materials but rather a curious and enjoyable grouping of tales by some of the most prominent creators over the last 6 decades.

Dont. Just dont.
By Nunya
1. I'm very disappointed that my department chose this book to read for promotion. This book is AWFUL. Simply awful. For more reasons than I can state. The grammatical errors are worse than our station cook's food today. (Yes, that bad). I cannot believe a publisher let this go to print.
2. Full of un-originality. Just a bunch of quotes and ideas from the famous leaders of the fire service.
3. There is no flow to this book. None at all. It bounces all over the place, and gets off on too many sidebars that leaves the reader wondering what the original thought was of the heading.
4. After reading this, I really could not tell anyone what it means, or what it is, to be a "Barn Boss."
To sum it up, unless you are assigned to read this book, just don't. I'll be donating this one to the fire pit post-promotion exam.

Editors exist for good reason.
By Justin
This book may have good ideas, but it's nearly impossible to find them in this grammatically incorrect written book. I'd get my money back if I didn't have to read this for promotion. Any department looking for good promotional material should look elsewhere! To the author, hire an editor, or even a writer. Being a good trainer or a good speaker or even having good ideas does not make you a good writer. It is said firemen are jacks of all trades; I think we can leave writing off the list though. This book is poorly written, just like most books written by firemen. If you really cared about the fire service as stated in this book, you'd have this edited by a professional to make reading this book tolerable.

By Andrew
This book is poorly written, in dire need of an editor, and several re-writes. The author makes points within the text without development or explanation. Chapters have information included which appear to be simply copied and pasted without reference to the text material at all. The author contradicts himself multiple times, does not cite all sources used, and in at least one citation gives credit to the wrong person. The author is nauseatingly arrogant in the repeated accounting of his accomplishments which do not lend to the subject matter, or stated thesis of the book. I am relegated to reading this book as a requirement for promotion. If it wasn’t going to be on the test I would return the book.

Amazon.com Review
Writer Edward Ball opens Slaves in the Family with an anecdote: "My father had a little joke that made light of our legacy as a family that had once owned slaves. 'There are five things we don't talk about in the Ball family,' he would say. 'Religion, sex, death, money and the Negroes.'" Ball himself seemed happy enough to avoid these touchy issues until an invitation to a family reunion in South Carolina piqued his interest in his family's extensive plantation and slave-holding past. He realized that he had a very clear idea of who his white ancestors were--their names, who their children and children's children were, even portraits and photographs--but he had only a murky vision of the black people who supported their livelihood and were such an intimate part of their daily lives; he knew neither their names nor what happened to them and their descendents after they were freed following the Civil War. So he embarked on a journey to uncover the history of the Balls and the black families with whom their lives were inextricably intertwined, as well as the less tangible resonance of slavery in both sets of families. From plantation records, interviews with descendents of both the Balls and their slaves, and travels to Africa and the American South, Ball has constructed a story of the riches and squalor, violence and insurrection--the pride and shame--that make up the history and legacy of slavery in America.

From School Library Journal
YA-A compelling saga, Ball's biographical history of his family stands as a microcosm of the evolution of American racial relations. Meticulously researched, and aided by the fact that the South Carolina Ball families were compulsive record keepers, the story begins with the first Ball to arrive in Charleston in 1698. The family eventually owned more than 20 rice plantations along the Cooper River, businesses made profitable by the work of slaves. In the course of his research, the author learned that his ancestors were not only slave owners, but also that there was a highly successful slave trader company in his background. He was able to trace the offspring of slave women and Ball men (between 75,000 and 100,000 currently living) and locate a number of his own African-American distant cousins. Although records indicate that the author's forebearers were not by any means cruel or vicious owners, his remorse for these facets of his family history is clear. In the course of his research, he visited Bunce Island, off the coast of Sierra Leone, to see the fortress from which his ancestors loaded terrorized men, women, and children onto slave ships. Their story represents that of many African Americans. This book helps readers to visualize, if not understand, the slave legacy still enmeshed in this country today. Despite its length, this is an important, well-written slice of history that will be of interest to young adults.

From Library Journal
In this National Book Award-winning saga, Ball traces his family back to their first arrival on American shores and also traces the lineage of the slaves his ancestors once owned. He follows their stories through the decades as the families branched out. The Balls grew to be among the most prominent of South Carolina plantation owners; the black people suffered both slavery and the wrenching disruption of emancipation. In between his genealogical and historical explorations, the author interviews living descendants from both groups. Somehow he avoids a liberal angst in favor of a directly honest, matter-of-fact approach to both the subject and the people. The living Ball descendants are generally cautious as they approach the subject; the black families show almost no bitterness, and their stories are varied and intense. As a reader, Ball is subdued and rarely shows emotion; the narrative itself is what gives this presentation its punch. A mandatory acquisition for all audiobook collections.ADon Wismer, Cary Memorial Lib., Wayne, ME

Fascinating detective story
By Dave Schwinghammer
Edward Ball is a descendant of rice plantation owners. Ball, son of a minister and former Village Voice columnist, set out to discover his connections to a slave-owning past. What he found was six generations of Balls who owned twenty plantations along the Cooper River near Charleston, South Carolina, masters over more than 4,000 African-Americans.
He finds Elias "Red Cap" Ball who inherited half of a 740-acre Comingtee Plantation and twenty black and Indian slaves in 1698. Elias had five white children and possibly two by his black housekeeper, Dolly. One of his children tells his heirs in his will to lend money at interest or buy young slaves. Henry Laurens, married to Red Cap's daughter Eleanor, owned the largest slave-trading firm in the colonies. They brought 7,800 Africans to America between 1751 and 1761, earning a hundred and fifty-six thousand pounds in commissions, making him and his wife one of the richest families in America. John Ball, Red Cap's grandson, leaves $227,191 to his heirs as a result of selling his belongings at auction, which included 367 people.
James Poyas, great-grandson of Red Cap, never married but seems to have had a relationship with a field hand named Diana, with whom he had a son, Frederick. Edward Ball finds Frederick's descendants, living in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Ball also tracks a young slave girl from Sierra Leone to Charleston, where Second Elias Ball bought her, and traces her lineage to Thomas P. Martin, retired assistant school principal and a seventh-generation descendant of Priscilla.
Edward Ball visits Sierra Leone, looking for descendants of slave traders there. Peter Karefa-Smart, a descendant of Gumbo Smart, a middleman for the British, doesn't seem to bothered by what his ancestor did. He says, "If there were no buyers, there would be no sellers, but you could turn it around and say, if there were no sellers, there would have been no buyers."
There are a couple of incidents that caught my interest. One was the story of Boston King, who escaped from Tranquil Hill, one of the Ball plantations. In 1792, Boston King and Twelve hundred other escaped slaves boarded ships bound for Sierra Leone, thus coming full circle. Another is the amazing resemblance between the author, Edmund Ball and his William James Ball, the patriarch of the Ball family during the Civil War. Give William James a haircut and a shave and they could be twins.

a courageous and engaging book. highly recommended
By English teacher
I found this book fascinating and admirable. Mr. Ball's research is impressive in its thoroughness and breadth. For example, how did he discover that many "loyalist slaves" who fought with the British in the Revolution and ended up in England had written memoirs of their lives? Ball gives the full sweep of his own white family history, but can only give partial histories of black families. When he only knows a fragment of someone's life, he gives that fragment, without apology, as testimony to the large, tragic gaps in Black History. This book is courageous, honest and moving. Highly recommended.

Coming to grips with the past...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
National Book Award-winner, Slaves in the Family, is one of the best nonfiction books I have read in the past ten years. Edward Ball comes from a very prominent family of plantation owners in the Charleston Low Country. The patriarch, Elias Ball, immigrates to the colonies in the late 1600's. Being very prolific when it came to progeny, he soon had children and grandchildren owning over two dozen plantations along the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. After the Civil War, the Ball plantations were sold or lost, one by one. Yet today, the Balls are still very prominent in Charleston Society. Their family tree is well documented, and instead of being plantation owners, they now count lawyers, judges, doctors and priests among their ranks.
In Edward Ball's first effort, he sets out to find the descendants of the thousands of Ball family slaves. This was no easy task. Many slaves had no last names. Others moved to distant states. Some descendants had no wish to speak with him. Ball also encountered reticence from his own family. The extended family did not like to talk about slavery. On the few occasions when the subject was raised, they all espoused the party line: 1. Balls never mistreated their slaves 2. Balls never separated slave families and 3. Ball masters never slept with female slaves.
Using surviving Ball journals, diaries, ledgers and inventories, Edward was able to contact a good many slave descendants. I found the most moving parts of the book are when Edward's research validates the oral history of many slave ancestors, and in some cases, helped them to fill in the missing pieces of their genealogical puzzle. Edward's research also helps him to discover more about his own ancestors. Contrary to Ball oral history, not all Ball plantation owners treated their slaves admirably. Also, slave families were sometimes separated-although mostly due to economic necessity (i.e. when slaves were sold to settle an estate). But what really shocked the author was when he discovered that he had ancestors of color! But save that topic for another book.
The only part of Slaves in the Family that bothered me was Edward Ball's insistence on being an apologist for slavery. Although slavery was a horrible institution, Ball was in no way responsible for what his ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Still, this is just a minor distraction in an otherwise fabulous book. In addition to reading Slaves in the Family, I also listened to it on tape and enjoyed it just as much the second time around. Edward Ball truly gives us a remarkable effort in his first at bat.

Great play, great electronic version
By Nick
Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

If you've got a Kindle and want to read Shakespeare, then download this version.

Shakespeare's best Villain
By R. J. Marsella
Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare's Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare's most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works.

The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

It's Shakespeare
By J. Chad Davis
Really, if you enjoy Shakespeare's plays, then you'll enjoy Othello. The actual read-ability of this digital version is excellent, so I'd recommend it above other digital versions.
