Extremely disappointed

I was looking for a book that covered Machine Learning from a practical, hands on perspective, and the "Practical Machine Learning" title certainly looked promising. Unfortunately, the only thing practical I could find in this book was the title.

I read the first five chapters and stopped; it was a huge waste of my time and my money. The book merely scratches the surface of the real topics; on the other hand, it spends a considerable amount of pages covering instructions on how to download and install software packges like Hadoop, R, Julia, etc. Most of the instructions are a poor copy and paste job from the original web sites. I don't need an entire chapter explaining how to install Hadoop - the Apache/Hadoop site has better instructions that are specific to my target operating system.

The illustrations are laughable, to say the least - very naive diagrams that were probably put together by someone who just learned how to use Power Point. They do nothing to explain concepts.

There is also quite a bit of material about ML tools that looks like it was extracted directly from the original web sites. I was looking for concrete problems, formulae, algorithms, code, etc. Couldn't find any.

Bottom line, this is a huge and expensive copy and paste scam. Stay away from it.

Keep looking for something better

NOTE: I haven't bought the book through Amazon. This is a review I made after learning ML using this book as reference.

I used this book to get introduced into the Machine Learning world. If you want a theoric guide, this book is totally recommended. The examples explained here are good enough for a beginner (you will need to look further for more definitions, though) and are pretty clear. Here, I would put 4 stars because it isn't the best guide out there.

Well, now, the reason why I reduced its rating comes in the part of configuration and code. I am using a Linux distro, so some instructions were clear. But the problem is that when configuring Hadoop and Mahout, the instructions were made by different people, so there were unclear or done steps. Ok, this is tolerable, even though it is a bad practice.

But after chapter 5, where the code examples are important, comes the nightmare. I tested the R examples of forests and few issues about importing some required libraries appeared. Ok, no problems here, just download and import it. But when I tried the rest, I only got errors. Reading the Python code, it was referencing local files from the author's computer, using deprecated functions from Scikit-learn and the code was pretty unclear to at least fix the problem. Until now I learned how to use Mahout on Eclipse (an IDE that I despise so much, but at least has a "good" integration with Maven), but still, the project has too many errors that are unclear for me, even looking through another sources. I lost too much time doing this, which I think it is not fair.

So I gave up and tried another books and sources. This book at least give a nice introduction to what kind of problems ML tries to solve, but after that, do not keep reading.

This attempts to cover a lot of material. Unfortunately, the english is poor and clunky. It's hard to imagine this was proof read by a native english speaker.

I purchased this book for my husband who has been fishing "up north" for over 60 years. He truly enjoyed the book and has passed it on to our son, an avid outdoorsman. Sam Cook is an excellent writer.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time about going up north. Fish,hunting,camping, and meeting other people are the best settings in the book. The book makes you feel like your up in the wilderness hunting or on the lake fishing.

misses the mark

I can see quite clearly what Sam Cook is aspiring to here and that is the only reason I gave even two stars. In my opinion he fails to evoke the true feeling of this wonderful part of the country. He also has the irritating habit of refering to himself as "he" or "the man". People interested in the north woods will be better served by reading Sigurd Olson.

Great for students

This book gives detailed descriptions of many of the most common/well-known counseling theories. This is the second theories book that I have had to use in my course of study and it is by far the better of the two. I am not finished with the entire book yet, but there does not seem to be any clear basis towards any one theory so far. There is detail about the history of the developer of the theory/theory itself, practical applications for current populations and methods utilized for each of the theories in this book.

This book is to be appreciated as what it is, a text book. The theories contained within are relatable to a school counselor, and are factual with support from other authors. The book includes exercises that you could do to help you better retain the information. The book was a little pricey with the used condition, but was in the general price-range one comes to expect from a textbook.

The picture of the book is not the same picture that I got. So far the book is what my assignments are aligned to but I did notice that my book says it is supposed to be sold in certain countries only. Im not sure what to think about that.

Pero la realidad que nos muestra, supera por mucho las peores suposiciones de lo que ha pasado en Michoac�n y muy probablemente est� siendo superado en Guerrero. �C�mo es posible que estos pol�ticos sigan sirvi�ndose de las comunidades m�s necesitadas de nuestro pa�s? �C�mo es posible que sigamos aguantando este r�gimen clept�crata y embustero? La realizaci�n de que todo lo que nos dicen en los medios masivos de comunicaci�n oficial, televisa, azteca y conexos son mentiras, es un clavo m�s al ata�d.
