Outstanding for all levels of students and teachers of conducting, Decker & Kirk's text is well organized and presents its eclectic contents from the most basic information to the advanced in an easy-to-read format that also allows the conductor quick reference in the future. Musical examples can be found throughout the text with sample markings that emphasize the teachings of each chapter. Other highlights of the text include:
A prologue discussing the importance of communication in a conductor; The relationship of the conducting gesture to the expression of the music (Chapter 1); An in-depth chapter on preparing the score with careful consideration to the historical perspective and score analysis. This section also includes models for score analysis and sample marked scores (Chapter 2); An extensive section on the role of the conductor in rehearsal, the reasons for careful preparation and planning, how to plan for different levels, and the choral instrument -- the physiology (breathing, phonation, amplification), diction, expression, and developmental exercises (Chapters 3-5); A chapter focusing on the criteria and guidelines for selecting repertory and building a program with your singers and audience in mind.

I am taking a conducting class in school. This is the text book for the class. Very useful. Help in communication is just what I need!! I would recommend this book to anyone who conducts a choir now or is planning to in the future either for a living or for Church, which is what I do.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

Shakespeare's best Villain

Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare's Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare's most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works.

The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

Really, if you enjoy Shakespeare's plays, then you'll enjoy Othello. The actual read-ability of this digital version is excellent, so I'd recommend it above other digital versions.

Solid enjoyable book, but lacking flair

I bought this book because I wanted to write an essay about concept albums for a university course I was doing. I actually expected it to be an amazon short for this price, but instead found it was around the length of a short novel. It was a pretty enjoyable read, though the introduction and last chapter were the best bits and I must admit I skim-read some of the middle chapters (I'm not that interested in concept albums by hip hop or country artists or whatever). It's not the most amazing music book I've ever read, since it lacks the flair of Simon Reynolds or Lester Bangs, etc. Despite that, it sure beat a lot of the crap I'd seen online so provides decent coverage of the subject I would say.

Fear and loathing in Heyer's world.

Could this really be by the same woman who wrote Cotillion, and The Grand Sophy, and many other marvellously witty historical romances? It is a Heyer that isn't a typical Heyer, but I highly recommend it. If you thought Heyer could only write romantic fluff and froth, you failed to notice and appreciate the cast-iron gauntlet of reality beneath the soft swansdown-trimmed velvet glove. Penhallow is a very unusual book, written to persuade Heyer's publishers to break off her contract - and it shows just how much talent Heyer had. She sat down and rushed off this book, and it came out as this deeply disquieting, deliberately dissatisfactory - but yet compelling and fascinating novel. One of her most savage and dysfunctional families comes together in this book. The imagery is powerful, the writing pulls no punches. This book will shock you if you thought you knew Heyer's style, it may even be a severe disappointment (I do not find it disappointing, but it is admittedly very hard to categorise) but it is frighteningly good. The tyranny and sadism of the old man unfortunately is all too believable, as are the reactions and behaviour of his family. It is a psychological novel with no romantic elements, and must not be read with the expectation of romance, but rather, prepared for the macabre, and the insights into the downtrodden or controlled psyches and minds. It is an extremely interesting book, and astonishingly well-written.

It's not likeable, but its good

I have to totally agree with the above review. This book is excellently written! It is similar to Agatha Christie's 'Hercule Poirot's Christmas' - only Heyer wrote her version about 5 years earlier. An old man is the tyrant of his household. When he is murdered, everything comes apart. Georgette Heyer conveys the emotions of dispair and hopelessness and regret much better than Christie does in her version. The murderer thought things would be better, they're not, but the old man can't be brought back to life again. I didn't like it because I like more light hearted books - and this is not Heyer's normal light-heartedness, admittedly, but it is very well written.

Heyer vs publisher - the Queen of Regencies wins

According to the biography of Georgette Heyer by Jane Aiken Hodge, Heyer was determined to get out of an unfavorable book contract. She was required to turn in a book, so she wrote this one, in an attempt to annoy the publisher by fulfilling the letter but not the spirit of the law. However, she was a terrific writer, and even in this deliberately crude and brutish offering (which is copyrighted 1942 and apparently takes place around that time), it's a great story, with rounded characters, although a few are rather stereotyped. For some reason, it seems that Heyer's contemporary novels always have some mannish women and womanish men in them, in a way that modern readers would probably find offensive. But in "Penhallow", she is trying to be offensive. The first line, "Jimmy the Bastard was cleaning boots..." gives the tip-off. The eponymic anti-hero is the universally loathed head of a household that lives in a constant state of brawling and backstabbing. When his loved ones gather for his birthday and he is murdered, it's a toss-up who did the deed. One of the best things about the book is that Heyer shows how the family falls apart without their hated patriarch. If you pick up this book because you know of Heyer as a witty writer of Regency and other historical romances, think twice. This is a very good book, but has absolutely nothing to do with wit. It is all about anger, not just that of the characters, but of the author.

Dr. Suarez served with distinction for over 11 years in the White House during the Clinton and Bush administrations. He was selected to lead the first Presidential Quality office in the institution’s history. Suarez led efforts to introduce systems thinking and organizational redesign into the White House Communications Agency, the White House Military Office and the Management and Administration of the Executive Office of the President of the United States. He also served as Director of Customer Support and Organizational Development for the White House Military Office. Suarez traveled aboard Air Force One and Presidential helicopters in numerous missions worldwide. He received many Presidential awards and commendations for his work including the White House Distinguished Service Award and the Commander-in-Chief coin. He is an internationally recognized authority on leadership, systems thinking and design, strategy formulation, innovation, and management of fear in the workplace. Through his career he collaborated with Dr. W. Edwards Deming, Dr. Russell L. Ackoff, and Stephen R. Covey. Suarez is an award-winning faculty at the University of Maryland in College Park where he holds the rank of Professor of the Practice in Systems Thinking and Design. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Faculty member in the Honors College. In his leadership roles at the Smith School of Business he served as Associate Dean of External Strategy, Executive Director of the multidisciplinary Quality Enhancement Systems and Teams Honors program, Fellow of the Center for Innovation Leadership and Change as well as Executive Education Senior Fellow. He teaches at the corporate, executive MBA, international and undergraduate programs. Dr. Suarez coaches executive leaders and is a leading adviser to government agencies and Fortune 500 companies. Read it and Act Upon It

This book stands with Tim Kelley's True Purpose, Elisabeth Lesser's Broken Open and Brene Brown's Daring Greatly as a must-read for anyone who seeks to know themselves better and make the most of their own life, Gerald Suarez is a great communicator. The book benefits from clear structure, simple but compelling language, and bite-sized suggestions for moving ourselves right along. Unlike many books that concentrate on self-actualization, the rigor of the thinking is clear, and the tone eminently practical: Dr. Suarez uses his expertise in systems thinking to give us lenses to see our own life landscapes. He then gives us questions to identify our own desires and dreams and to design a measurable plan to create our own future. Although the book is crisp and based on deep social science knowledge there is heart and imagination in every line. Dr. Suarez urges us not to be human pinata, swinging wildly as a result of the action and intent of others, but instead to learn to lead ourselves to our ideal futures. Read it and act upon it.
