Hannibal Barca, The Greatest General: The Meteoric Rise, Defeat, And Destruction Of Rome's Fiercest Rival, by Barry Linton

In his book entitled Hannibal Barca, The Greatest General: The Meteoric Rise, Defeat, and Destruction of Rome's Fiercest Rival author Barry Linton chronicles the adventures, myth, and legacy of Hannibal Barca. Hannibal accomplished many great successes, experienced personal tragedies, and yet persevered through it all. Nearly 2,200 years ago, he waged a 15 year long campaign against the Romans called the Second Punic War. He's a polarizing character in history, and continues to be mysterious. Many documents of his exploits were most likely destroyed or altered by the conquering Romans, but what remains of his story has been studied by historians for over a thousand years. A military genius, he survived in enemy lands and defeated nearly every army that ever assembled against him. His great strategic victories and stunning crossing of the Alps have been esteemed by modern-day military leaders. Hannibal is considered to be one of the most brilliant generals in history, fathering many strategies that would later be applied by leaders such as Napoleon Distinguished Generals have looked to his campaigns for guidance, such as Napoleon and George Patton. He led from the front, never asking his men to do what he would not. This book examines his life and his accomplishments. Follow along as we learn about his origins, beginning with his rise to power and ending with his eventual suicide. His life and legacy remains the subject of art, literature, as well as other mediums. Hannibal often faced numerically superior enemy forces, but through ingenuity and the loyalty of his men, he would win battle after battle against the Romans.

Poor Editing; Lacks Maps and References
By Russell V. Olson Jr.
I read this book on my Kindle as the one free book I borrow for each month from the Kindle lending library.
As a retired Army colonel who served 30 years with 13 years overseas including a tour in Vietnam followed by teaching high school history for 13 years, I feel qualified in criticizing this biography of one of my favorite leaders. I also spent a full day on Hannibal in my military history course.
The book is marred by numerous errors which reflect poor editing or lack of knowledge on the part of the author. For example, in Chapter 3, the author stated that Hannibal was recalled to defend Carthage after the Romans finally invaded North Africa. This section is out of sequence. If the author was attempting to give an overview of the Punic Wars, he should have done so in the first or second chapters. Several times, the author incorrectly uses the term “embassy” when he should have used phrases such as “emissary” or “diplomatic mission.” In Chapter 4, the author wrote that Alexander the Great introduced elephants into Mediterranean warfare after having encountered them in India. While Alexander did encounter elephants in India, he did before returning to Europe. In fact, I thought the first few chapters were a bit incoherent. The author did settle down however when he turned solely to his study on Hannibal in Italy and afterward.
I was pleased that the author correctly described the elephants that Hannibal used. Too many people have the mistaken belief that Hannibal used sub-Sharan elephants (which have never been tamed).
The author titled Chapter 8, “The Die is Cast” but failed to explain how that phrase came about. It would have been an excellent opportunity to link Hannibal’s crossing into northern Italy with Caesar’s crossing the Rubicon.
The author emphasized religious ceremony and the efforts by commanders to seek or ensure the blessings of the gods. I had not heretofore realized the pains that Hannibal had taken in this area.
The book lacked maps and references.

Could have been better!
By Mario DeLosa
Frankly, “Hannibal Barca, The Greatest General: The Meteoric Rise, Defeat, And Destruction of Rome's Fiercest Rival” leaves to be desired. Barry Linton is clearly a fan of Hannibal Barca, which is fine. What was not pleasing to me as a dedicated history student were some of the egregious errors in the book, such as references to corn. Maize, more commonly known as corn, did not make its way to Europe until after the arrival of Europeans in the America’s in the 15th Century. I find hard to believe that Mr. Linton did not realize this and that in the period before the common-era wheat was probably the primary food staple of the Mediterranean basin. The fact that Mr. Linton used the term corn can only be attributed to somewhat lackluster scholarship and poor editing. Mr. Linton also made it sound like Hannibal’s defeat at Zama was virtually foreordained, which was hardly the case as according to most historians that I can think of Hannibal’s defeat was due to the timely return of the Roman cavalry under Laelius and Massinissa. Even Dexter Hoyos, who described Hannibal’s performance at Zama as reactive and uninspired, did not describe the Battle of Zama as an inevitable victory for Scipio. Overall this was an interesting book, but it could have been much better.
