About the Author
John Langan has taught reading and writing at Atlantic Cape Community College near Atlantic City, New Jersey, for more than twenty-five years. The author of a popular series of college textbooks on both writing and reading, John enjoys the challenge of developing materials that teach skills in an especially clear and lively way. Before teaching, he earned advanced degrees in writing at Rutgers University and in reading at Rowan University. He also spent a year writing fiction that, he says, is now at the back of a drawer waiting to be discovered and acclaimed posthumously. While in school, he supported himself by working as a truck driver, a machinist, a battery assembler, a hospital attendant, and an apple packer. John now lives with his wife, Judith Nadell, near Philadelphia. In addition to his wife and Philly sports teams, his passions include reading and turning on nonreaders to the pleasure and power of books. Through Townsend Press, his educational publishing company, he has developed the nonprofit Townsend Library, a collection of more than a hundred new and classic stories.

Why only loose-leaf or kindle?

The explanations and exercises--as with other, older versions of this book--seem sensible and easy to follow, and the readings may prove useful for students and teachers wishing to expand on the readings available in other texts. The loose-leaf format seems awkward and not necessarily convenient. What I've heard from people at my college is that students wonder why it doesn't also have holes punched that would allow them to put the pages into a smaller notebook that would be a better fit for the pages (the two holes line up with the top two rings of a regular-sized three-ring binder). Teachers also would like it to be easier to "bind" (in a notebook or otherwise) and worry that students might just bring portions of this unbound version to class--or accidentally drop it when it's not yet in the notebook. Would binding cost that much more? (I see that the bound version is not available on Amazon.)

The only thing that sucks about this book on Ebooks is that it has the answers and when you want to print them out the answers are on there. When I rent this book it didn't say anything about it being for instructors. :(
