PreSchool-Grade 1 Bill Hooper sings 12 original songs which are designed to invite listener participation. He sings these mostly rock style songs in a very nice, deep voice, accompanied by guitar and percussion instruments. "Rabbit & Turtle" is a song version of the famous Aesop fable, with listeners encouraged to pat their laps for the running rabbit. During "Seasons," listeners twirl and fall down slowly like autumn leaves, snowflakes, and spring blossoms. As Hooper sings about the different "Colors," youngsters are to stand up when they hear the color that they are wearing. In "My Place," children walk, hop, march, and run in place. For "Garage Door," youngsters are to raise their arms. Listeners hop, fly, and run in place during "Hop Little Bunny." Children are encouraged to imitate the "Silly Little Ostrich" by hiding their faces. The "Parrot Song" introduces different animal sounds. Listeners climb and run in place for "Climb Up the Mountain." In "Big Red Ball," they roll one arm over the other. For "Bees," listeners move to the directions in the song. Finally, children march in place to the "March Song." Other fairly recent albums that encourage children to move and participate with the songs include AlphaBeat (Nov. 2001, p. 80) and Wiggle and Whirl (July 2001, p. 63). They have more variety of musical styles, instrumental background, and movement activities than Hooper's album. social studies and math a winning combination

On our trips back and forth to summer day camps we have sung these fun songs over and over. Now the kids are singing along on the answers to the multiplication facts after only a week! Betsy Ross and Ben Franklin and Dracula are our favorites. The rhyming cues to the answers are slick, helpful answer associations/prompts, and we have had some good conversations stimulated by the historical facts in the lyrics. I bought multiple copies and have given nearly all of them away already.

This is the Only multiplication cd. that we've found that is actually helpful in memorizing the multiplication tables.
Other cds are just a person repeating, over and over, the times tables with music playing in the background. This cd. is totally different.
Each song tells a story of a historical or well known fictional figure. This makes it interesting to discuss and you can order it in your mind because each verse talks about a memorable event or thing in that person's life.
Each event in each verse ends with a rhyme to the product of the multiplication problem.
Example:
I'm Robin Hood. I help the poor.
I take 2 X 2 and give them 4
I live in the forest with trees and sticks.
I turn 2 X 3 into 6
The songs are well produced and varied. The music and voices are good. The songs are fun.
After the end of the verses laying out the table for that number, each song continues in song to give problems, pause, then problem with factor. Example: 2 X 2 is... 2 X 2 is 4. So you can sing along -- see if you get the right answer and then know immediately in the next verse.
