A Great Statrting Point for PROFIBUS

The book provides details of PROFIBUS from a practical vantage point. In fact, it's interspersed with James' own experiences. Even though I've been around PROFIBUS since the PROFIBUS Trade Organization (PTO) was founded in 1994, I still learned a few things. And I found different ways of talking about things I did know.
[Full disclosure: James had asked me to read a small part of an early version, which I did. I did not expect that little effort would qualify my name for the Acknowledgements page but it did. Despite my name being in it (as opposed to because my name is in it), I really like this book and heartily recommend it.]

Technically deep and a great read

Simply the most accessible introduction to a technically challenging subject that I have ever read. James and Henry have combined good engineering with good writing. Digital automation protocols are growing and Profibus is in the forefront. Uptake by industry of these protocols would be even faster than it currently is if more people would write (and teach) about these subjects as clearly and enjoyably as James and Henry do.
The Reader will understand the technical ins and outs of Profibus once they have finished this concise presentation of the subject.

Don't buy if you want to implement profibus in a product - not worth $66

I would not recommend this book to anyone trying to actually implement profibus in a product or trying to implement profibus for process control. It is definitely not worth $66.45, maybe $10 - $20. I'm not even sure who I would recommend this book to, maybe a manager or marketing person trying to get some very basic information on the subject. I have not been able to find a good reference on profibus for engineers trying to implement profibus into a product and wanting to understand the limitations of a system. This book also seems to focus a lot on profibus PA which is extremely slow, but serves a different purpose really than DP.
To be fair after getting the book and reading the Foreward it states the intent is not to write a definitive and comprehensive handbook on profibus. It definitely does that well.
