Dr. Ivannia Soto is associate professor of Education at Whittier College, where she specializes in second language acquisition, systemic reform for English language learners (ELLs), and urban education. She began her career in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), where she taught English and English Language Development to a population made of up 99.9% Latinos, who either were or had been ELLs. Before becoming a professor, Dr. Soto also served LAUSD as a literacy coach and district office administrator. She has presented on literacy and language topics at various conferences, including the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), the California Association for Bilingual Association (CABE), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the National Urban Education Conference. As a consultant, Soto has worked with Stanford University’s School Redesign Network (SRN) and WestEd, as well as a variety of districts and county offices in California, providing technical assistance for systemic reform for ELLs and Title III. Soto is the co-author of The Literacy Gaps: Building Bridges for ELLs and SELs, as well as ELL Shadowing as a Catalyst for Change and From Spoken to Written Language with ELLs, all published by Corwin Press. A nice introduction but...

This book is a nice introduction on DPOV, but I was looking for much more and more in depth on the subject. If you don't know what a DPOV is, then this book is for you. If you're fimiliar with it, it will not give you depth you're looking for.

There are things the writer hasn't mentioned which I consider basics. I wish this writer would check with other writers to add to this small booklet and correct the author's mishaps.

Some of the examples given weren't that deep. Same expressions sounded like cliche. And anything that's overused will ruin that dream.

Some of the things just weren't explained right and confused me.

For example:

"We should not indicate to our reader what the POVC is feeling or thinking or doing before we have delivered the cause and effect always"!

Hmmm

I might agree with not telling the feeling, but the rest is misleading. It's if you would ask, "What came first?: an egg or a chicken?" Something has to come first.
Thoughts precede actions. But you don't have to write each thought before the action. Another rule in writing is to start with action and explain later.

And I don't see anything wrong with using prepositional phrases. That shouldn't even be taken into consideration. If a sentence is telling, naming the emotion, or violating the order, that's the reason why it isn't in DPOV.

And consider the following:

"A sigh heaved between my lips..."

I don't consider the above DPOV. Who thinks that way? If you're in the character's head and using DPOV, you wouldn't think that. I sighted works much better. A sigh doesn't leave from another part of the body. It's overwritten.

I found other sentences that the author said are written in DPOV, but for me they don't work well. They take me out of that dream. To write from a DPOV, you need to keep your reader dreaming.

This booklet is very short, includes a lot of worksheets. It shouldn't have been made into a book but given to readers on the author's blog. It was way overpriced.

Simply the best!

This book will challenge any writer, no matter how experienced, to a higher standard of the craft. Jill Elizabeth Nelson changed the way I write my fiction. Going "deep" eliminated several problems in my writing and created others, e.g., working harder at characterization, avoiding lazy language, and writing in a linear fashion.

Be afraid! After reading Rivet Your Readers (three times in a row), I found examples of shallow POV everywhere in my WIP. Thankfully, with the help of Ms. Nelson's examples, I know how to rewrite for better effect. If you're unsure of the difference between shallow POV and deep POV, this short, pithy book will make it clear. So, fellow writers, prepare to be challenged and sensitized.

Excellent explanation of Point of View

As an editor, one of the biggest problems I see, especially from new authors, is difficulty with point of view. This book is the answer to that problem. It not only explains point of view simply and clearly, it provides excellent examples that help authors understand exactly what they need to do to improve their writing and make their stories come alive. I will definitely recommend this book to each and every one of my authors and I plan to reread it and apply the techniques to improve my own writing as well. This book is worth every penny and then some.
