Excellent Books

We've used homework helpers since pre-k, now my son will be in 1st grade. Every summer I buy 3 of these workbooks so he can spend 20 mins a day doing 2 or 3 pages for the next grade up. He is excelling academically in school and I think these have helped a great deal with his confidence in his school work too.

hey, it's not THAT bad

Afraid I've got to take issue with a one-star rating for this novel. Sure, it's not the best Bond novel -- that's probably "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," although I've also got a soft spot for the unusual "The Spy Who Loved Me" -- but it's hardly a bad novel. Scaramanga, far from being a terrible villain, is actually one of the more memorable Fleming ever wrote. I enjoy the way in which he serves as a sort of dark mirror for Bond himself, and that makes me feel like Fleming was actually just trying something different with this novel. That may or may not make it one of the lesser of his Bond novels, but I think saying that it's just plain bad is an overstatement.
Anyways, if you're a Bond fan, you still ought to give the novel a look.

Did Fleming Finish This Book?

The James Bond novels have been a staple in my home for over 40 years, since I started reading them at 10 years old. I read every novel once every two years it seems, as Fleming's impeccable writing, his plots, his villians, and most of all, the decription of detail that makes reading these novels the ultimate escape.

That said, I think I know how Fleming writes...

Each time I read this book, I get a growing feeling that not only did Ian Fleming not finish the book, it seems like he wrote almost exactly HALF, and some one else took over upon his death.

As a little Fleming is better than none at all, I still read the book.

Ian Fleming wrote 007 Novels for 11 years. They are all superb, wuth the earlier, grittier ones being the best. I don't play cards, but I was sweating along with Bond while he played Le Chiffre at Casino Royale.

You get that same marvelous sense of being in the story the first half of The Man With The Golden Gun, and then the story (and the writing) seem to go wrong.

For Bond completists only

To a certain extent, it feels unfair to criticize The Man With the Golden Gun, the last of Ian Fleming's original James Bond books. It is generally agreed that Fleming, seriously ill while writing this book, died before having a chance to rewrite his initial, sketchy drafts. The book itself was rushed out by Fleming's publishers and therefore, if it often reads like a first draft that's because it is.
This is the book that finds James Bond returning to MI6 after being briefly brainwashed by the KGB. Needing to redeem himself in the eyes of M (who, in this book's rushed characterization, is at his most coldly unlikeable), Bond is sent to take out international assassin Paco Scaramanga, whose trademark is that he kills with a golden gun. As said, the entire book reads like a sketch of an idea (a short story really) and Fleming's prose and dialouge are (through not fault of his own) rough and unpolished. However, the book does have a few good points that are all the more remarkable when you consider the duress Fleming was under when he wrote it. Scaramanga is a potentially fascinating character, a wonderfully image of James Bond as if reflected in a funhouse mirror. Indeed, it is hard not to feel that if Fleming had lived to write a second draft, Scaramanga would be remembered as one of his most memorable villians, in league with Dr. No and Goldfinger. As well, there is wonderfully elegiac about the book's final chapter where Bond spends a few pages considering his legacy as a secret agent and his future in espionage. Fleming, surely knowing that this would be his final novel, uses the chapter to sum up all that he had written over the past 15 or so years and it serves as a nice tribute for the fans of the original James Bond, confirming everything that made us a fan in the first place. The Man with The Golden Gun isn't a book that accurately reflects the depth of Fleming's talent or the potential of the literary James Bond but it still has a few shiny moments that shows why Bond has endured.

About the Author

Of course I focus on the nits...

BUT While I can forgive an error of 5 orders of magnitude in the size of an atomic nucleus, no chemist active in the 1940-1970 period should omit cobalt from a list of elements essential in human nutrition (We watched the B-12 synthesis happen). And it just bothers me to see an actual chemist say "92 natural elements" (astatine and francium, at least, shouldn't be included as natural; probably not technetium...unless you want to expand the list to include a few heavy actinides.) A chemist should say "about 90."

But the book is really about the drug discovery stories. They're wonderful. Frankly, the one failure is my favorite of all.

Fun reading!

Pearson's Kilenya series is a fun read! I like the way that she takes the fantasy world of Kilenya, and keeps it so close and doable with our society. I also really appreciate that Jacob does only a limited number of obviously stupid things. Too many books seem to love making their heros morons who constantly do dumb things but in the end are successful. For the most part Jacob is just an honest kid trying to find his way in the world - well, in two world's really. Several of my kids and my wife have also read the books and love them! It's a fun and exciting family read!

A Forever Fan!!

So, a year or so ago, my friend mentioned your book, Key of Kilenya on Facebook. She said how good it was and definitely worth a read. I always love a good book, so I checked it out from the library and read it. In two days. And it only took me that long because I have four kids that feel the need to eat regularly and need other types of care. (strange, but true ;-)) I absolutely loved it!!! I have bought every one of your Kilenya books as they have come on Kindle. Sadly, I was only able to read about halfway through the fourth book before life happened and I was distracted and unable to get back to it. Until last Monday. I caught the stomach bug that was going around, and couldn't do much more than just sit on the couch and feel miserable. I decided it was the perfect time to continue the story of Jacob and Eklaron and all the adventures that came with. But I couldn't seem to stick with it until I realized, it had been too long. I worried there were little details I had forgotten that were important to the story. I couldn't even start at the beginning of book four. I started all the way back on page one of book one. I have now read them all but the last. (which I am so excited for it to be released!!!) Now, just to clarify the time frame a little bit, I started on Monday afternoon and just finished number five this afternoon. I read anytime and anywhere!!!! I didn't want to put it down!!! I LOVE these books!!! Thank you so much for writing something so clean and wholesome but with conflict and danger!!! All the characters are so relatable and lovable!!! I can hardly wait to see how the story concludes!!! I feel as though I am part of the story and they are all my friends!! I'm sorry to go on and on, but I haven't enjoyed a book, let alone an entire series, this much for a long, long time!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! These are books I will definitely share with my kids as they grow.

Fun Read!

Pearson's books are reminiscent of both J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, and Rick Riordon's Percy Jackson Series with a twist all their own. She is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the field of YA fantasy.
Young Jacob, our hero, is thrust into a world of magic and monsters that he doesn't fully understand at first. But he grows to love this new land, and to accept his own destiny in it just as Harry and Percy both do.
Pearson masterfully blends the world of Eklaron with the normal reality of Earth, and shows what happens when the two interact. I find her style of writing fun and exciting, while managing to keep her character's real and personable.
In this latest installation, Jacob and his friends face some of their most difficult challenges yet. Keitus, the evil Lorkon ruler, is bent on finally achieving his goal to dominate not only Eklaron, but Earth as well. Jacob is frustrated with all he's had to give up so far, but still tries to do what is right. But when is enough, enough? Can he save both worlds, and still salvage his normal life?
As always, I eagerly await the next book in The Kilenya Series.

Chloe never set out to be famous, but her marriage to Hollywood A-lister, Jason Vanderholt, made her a celebrity by association. The one ally Chloe has in her own family is her half-sister, Beth, a public prosecutor intent on bringing Chris to justice. Her approach is so aggressive that everyone from Chloe’s security specialist to the police detective insists that she is doing more harm than good. Beth assures Chloe that her way is the only way that will work, which leaves Chloe to decide whether to trust the experts, or the sister she barely knows. The wrong choice puts her very life in danger.

Great addition to one of my favorite series!

I love this series. It's one of my favorites because it is engaging and keeps up an even pace. The characters are familiar to me now and I'm invested in them and their happiness. I think you probably could read this book as a stand alone, but I don't think it will be as good as if you started from the beginning.

Chloe and Jason are good together. They've been through a lot of things and they work hard at taking care of each other. That's what I like best about them. They are figuring things out together. Jason especially really steps up in this book and works hard to put Chloe first and be there for her. Chloe has a lot of big life things happening and she is trying hard to take care of the people she loves but honestly, she has a pretty messed up family and it's sort of crazy! Chloe is strong even in her moments of weakness- and she does have those- which helps me to relate and empathize with her.

This series sort of reminds me of a soap opera. Especially this episode. :) It has a hint of danger and suspense, tons of family drama- who do you trust? Old enemies, new allies, and behind it all a sweet continuing romance between a girl and her famous husband.

This book was easy to read. I read through it quickly and enjoyed all my minutes with these characters. I'm glad to be a part of the review team for this book and I thank WordSmith Publicity for the review copy.

Disappointed

I really love this series, but this latest installment was a disappointment for me. I felt like the title was completely misleading. As if there was going to be some big blowup between Chloe and her half-sister. Never happened. Also, I feel like the most recent entries of the series have completely put Jason in the background. He is one of my favorite characters and I feel like he has become a pale shadow of what he used to be. Almost an afterthought. Also, the plot felt really rushed and the book is short. Almost like the author had an idea of where she wanted to go, but wanted the characters to get there as quickly as possible.

Good series

Good writing. Like the series. Clean. Safe reading for teens. Very little romance , but crime story is good and entertaining. Her husband was such a devoted pursuer in first book, but he's lost is character in following books. I know following books are more about crime and less about romance, but I'd still like to see his romantic side. Chloe is sort of 'dry and standoffish' in the emotion/romance department, which I realize she had a rough childhood, but I'd like to see her give more love back to her husband too instead of always being 'irritated' by something they do or say in their relationship. Great author, keep em coming!
