About the Author
David G. Hunter, MD, PhD�is Ophthalmologist-in-Chief and the Richard M. Robb Chair of Ophthalmology at Children's Hospital Boston. He is also the Vice Chair and Associate Professor of the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Hunter obtained a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Rice University and a PhD (in Cell Biology) and MD from Baylor College of Medicine. After he completed an ophthalmology residency at Harvard's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, he received fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology with Drs. David Guyton and Michael Repka at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute, Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Hunter lectures on optics and refraction for ophthalmologists-in-training around the world. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (2006-2012) and Vice President of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (2010). His clinical and research interests focus on strabismus and amblyopia. ��

Constance E. West, MD�graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering. Dr. West then received her MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She completed a residency in ophthalmology at Washington University and a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute. She is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati and Director of the Division of Ophthalmology and the Abrahamson Pediatric Eye Institute at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her clinical practice is devoted to pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus.

Beautiful book.

This is a beautiful book to really help you to focus on what is important during the Christmas season. There is a section for each day of Advent and each section includes the lectionary citations for that day, a reflection from Pope Francis, and a prayer from Pope Francis. The reflections come from several sources of Pope Francis' teachings including his daily homilies. I have read through a few of the first few days of this Advent book and the words of Pope Francis are full of hope and joy.

This book would be a perfect way for a family to celebrate this season together, by taking a few moments each day reading the words of Pope Francis and praying together. I know I will be using this book with my family throughout the Christmas season.

'The Joy of Advent' is a devotional based on writings

3.5 stars. 'The Joy of Advent' is a devotional based on writings, sermons, and prayers of Pope Francis. Straightforward and filled with Francis’s message of joy and of God’s love, it’s easy to follow though sometimes challenging to put into practice, making it a good choice for an Advent devotional – with a few caveats.

Each day begins with list of scripture readings for the day, followed by “A Word from Pope Francis” – essentially a sermon or homily drawn from Francis’s writings or addresses. However, because the selections weren’t all originally intended for or delivered during Advent, they may reflect the theme of the readings but don’t always address or comment on the readings directly. In “Taking the Word to Heart”, the author/compiler, Diane M. Houdek, looks at the readings and ties them to Francis’s words. “Bringing the Word to Life” suggests ways to apply whatever was discussed or learned in the first two sections to your own life. The day then closes with a prayer from Pope Francis (not written for this book) that relates to the day’s devotion, though not always perfectly.

It’s hard to review this sort of book without experiencing it as it is meant to be used, so although I received a review e-copy back in October, I decided to read it during Advent, daily. (Well, to be completely honest, I’ve missed a few days here and there and had to make them up — but I tried to make time each day!)

As with any devotional or daily prayer book, I found that some days’ reflections really resonated with me, while others were harder to connect to — and those may be the ones I need the most. Pope Francis’s message of God’s love for us and ours for God comes across very clearly, but I wish the reflections focused more specifically on the scripture readings. The drawback of the book’s “taken from Francis’s words” approach is that the connection between readings and reflection is not as close as it would be if Francis had set out to write a devotional himself. I would also appreciate having the text of the readings included within the book, instead of merely listed, so I could easily refer back to them.

Despite these reservations, many readers may find 'The Joy of Advent' helpful in stepping out of the bustle of holiday preparations and focusing on the the joy of the season.

Important subject marred by academese

I remember as a student reading Blake, and though I didn’t really understand him, I felt in my guts that Blake was on to something very, very important. He could see that the brave new world that was developing around him was on its way to conquer the earth while losing its soul. And we were in the same boat, discarding religion and stepping out into the abyss. That may be why interest in Blake has exploded in the past half century, among a select group of people. The number of books published on Blake since then can fill a large bookcase. Google his name and you will see the interest.
But Blake has always been a problem for those who really want to study his thinking. He lived in dangerous, intolerant times and had to write some of his long poems in a kind of code. For generations the prophetic books were looked on as incomprehensible. But then came Northrop Frye and his superb book "Fearful Symmetry" and then Foster Damon and his invaluable “A Blake Dictionary” and the gates finally opened.
Now there is Laura Quinney and her “Blake on the Soul and Self.” She could not have picked a better topic for this is the essence of Blake. He not only tried to show the sickness and self-division of modern educated man but a way out of the trap. Quinney does a fine job of explaining the chief prophetic books and her writing is clear. But she seems to aim her book at fellow academics. So you will meet such words as alterity, aleatory, aporia, apodosis. When she mentioned a “collapse of agency” it took me a moment to figure out she meant something to do with active, generative. There are more elegant ways to say “our species dwells alone in sunderance” or “the linear temporality of the natural world.” That’s just a sample. As I neared the end of a couple of the chapters I felt like a school boy impatiently waiting for the 3:00 p.m. bell to ring. Still, Quinney’s topic is important and helped me understand better such phrases as Divine Imagination and Mental Fight. If you are getting ready to read the prophetic books , or have read them, this is an excellent help.
A bit of nit picking. Quinney calls Blake an atheist. No. He is not a theist or a pantheist but he certainly believed in a higher power and was deeply spiritual. You can discard Nobodaddy and still believe in God. Quinney also says “contact with nature is detrimental to the soul.” It is in nature that I first felt my intimation of transcendence. Also, “consciousness has no place in nature.” Well, without consciousness I couldn’t experience nature. Animals have consciousness, even though they can’t say I am I. I know, these are particular definitions with their own special meanings but that could be made clearer.

In many ways Blake really saw into the depths of our souls and came close to the truth about life and its meaning. Compared to Blake people like Sigmund Freud were half blind. But it is sad to me that he could not make his understanding more practical, at least a bit of the time. Here was a man propagating an active, dynamic, heroic spirituality. He saw himself as a Creator with a capital C, with the power of God in him. Yet there were days when he and his wife went hungry for lack of money. When he died he was taken to a pauper’s field and thrown into a pit, followed soon by two other bodies on top of his. Could he not have used his Divine Imagination to earn a bit more money? There is nothing wrong with giving the devil his due as long as you keep your soul. Anyway, I’m glad I read this book. I gave it three stars because this review is aimed at the average Blake lover, not the aspiring Ph.D. I would give Frye’s and Damon’s books five stars.

About the Author
For 37 years, Muni lived as a monk in a Hindu monastery on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The primary focus of his monastic study was an ancient and traditional yoga called "Raja Yoga." During his monastery years, Muni (also known as Natarajnathaswami) served as a primary teacher of younger monks. Additionally, he held yoga workshops for spiritual seekers visiting the monastery, and participated as a teacher on the monastery's travel/study programs. These travel/study programs, called Innersearches, merged pilgrimage with yoga during travels to India and other global destinations. Prior to entering the monastery, Muni was a professional jazz musician who played drums for Quincy Jones, the Glen Miller Band, and Don Ho in Hawaii. As a result of his musical inclination, Muni became the monastery's primary chant and bhajan leader. He studied the Indian musical system of ragam and talam and received instruction in tabla and classical North Indian singing from the highly esteemed Swami Nada Brahmananda of India. Muni had the distinct privilege of traveling the world with his guru, Satgurudeva Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, an enlightened mystic who received the Year 2000 U Thant Peace Award from Sri Chimnoy of the United Nations. Muni also worked as an artist, designer, writer and editor of Hinduism Today magazine. His writing focused on yoga, vegetarianism, meditation and Ayurveda. Since departing the monastery in 2007, Muni has been writing books about yoga and sharing his inner discoveries and inspirations through world music and art. His most recent book, A Monk's Tale, chronicles his adventures living as a Hindu monk in San Francisco, Hawaii and India. Muni's book, Into the I of All: An Ultimate Yoga, serves as a basis for his weekend workshops and classes. As a teacher, Muni's intention is to do as his guru did – help students find inner peace and contentment amidst everyday challenges while seeking Self Realization in an ultimate practice of yoga.

Exploring the Spiritual Life from the Inside Out

In A Monk's Tale, Muni shares his experiences of living as a monk for over 30 years. He reveals a great deal of wisdom about spiritual life and practice, much of it transmitted from his wise and beautiful teacher, Gurudev. I love this book. It's inspiring, instructive, and helps to take spiritual seekers deeper into understanding of the spiritual path. It's also a good story. I highly recommend it. - Debra Moffitt, Author of "Awake in the World" and "Garden of Bliss"

Why I love the book 'A Monk's Tale'; written by Muni Natarajan

I am LOVING this book! I have had the pleasure of meeting the author a long time ago, and he and his wife are two of my very favorite people on Earth. Let me say that I would love the book even if I had not met them. I had always wondered what life was like for Mr. Natarajan as he was beginning his quest for a monastic life as well as what monastic life was like for him. In reading about Gurudeva and his teachings, I find myself wishing that I could have known him too, and maybe on some plane, I do. Mr. Natarajan writes in such a way that I find it difficult to put my Kindle down in order to accomplish things I must do, or to even sleep! I am looking forward to reading more of his books in the future. I highly recommend this book!
