The Humanity of John Wesley

Tony Headley, Professor of Counseling at Asbury Theological Seminary, utilizes modern psychological paradigms in order to analyze John Wesley. The result is that Wesley appears a lot like we are. While Headley confesses his admiration for Wesley, he also confessed that he grieved for Wesley in his struggles with personal relationships.

Headley demonstrates how our family can become a crucible, giving shape to life and ministry. John Wesley was raised in an environment which valued the Anglican Church, the ordained ministry, and loved education and poetry. It was also a family of troubled marriages and financial mismanagement. The family was also adversely influenced by Samuel's desertion of the family on two occasions.

At five years of age John was a "brand plucked from the burning." He was rescued from a second-story window of a house on fire moments before the roof crashed. But John was also a replacement child. He is the fourth child in a family of nineteen to have been named John. He felt a sense of destiny and as a result, felt driven.

John's family tended to seek his advice and he, in turn, was shaped by his own mother's advice. John also fell in love with and considered marriage to the three women who nursed him as an adult: Sophy Hopkey, Grace Murray, and Mary Vazeille. Perhaps in all three instances he was looking for his mother. Yet his own marriage, at forty-eight years of age, was marred by his failure to understand the biblical relationship of marriage.

Originally John felt that marriage was a hindrance to ministry. However, Wesley wrote in 1749, "St. Paul slowly and gradually awakened me out of my mystic dream; and convinced me, `The bed is undefiled and no necessary hindrance to the highest perfection.' Though still I did not quite shake off the weight, till our last conference in London." When he married two years later, he determined not to preach one sermon less or travel one less mile. Thus, he was driven to minister to the needs of others, while neglecting the needs of his own spouse. Perhaps John was reflecting the model exemplified by his father.

This book should not be dismissed as nothing more than psycho-babble imposed upon a great man of God. The discipline of psychology should neither be uncritically embraced nor uncritically rejected. I was willing to plow through the psychological jargon because I spent a week with Headley in Nigeria, where we were both adjunct lecturers at West Africa Theological Seminary in 2008. I heard sections of this book in its formation most evenings at the dinner table and I knew Headley was committed to the health of the minister. He was not trying to debunk our Wesleyan heritage or revise history.

Headley concluded, "Wesley stands as a shining example of what God can do in a life totally committed to him." Headley also expressed amazement at Wesley's ability to transcend, at least to some measure, his family of origin issues in order to influence a nation and the world. Yet Wesley was not infallible and he was influenced by the dynamics within his own family.

Some of us inherited similar baggage, but did not inherit equal gifts with Wesley. We will have to become intentional in working through our past if we are to have any significant ministry

John Wesley's Family Life

I found this book to be very interesting. I did not know much about John Wesley's life before picking this up--to be honest, I'm not sure that I cared to know much about the man's life at first, but the author included so many interesting stories and details that I couldn't put it down! For those interested in family systems theory, this text is rich with real-life examples and stories that make the concepts come alive. I not only finished with what I feel is a thorough sense of who the "real" John Wesley is (and also his family of origin), but I also gained a more well-rounded understanding of family systems from which to draw in my future counseling practice.

COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!!

Alright...to begin with, I don't recommend books to friends, family, neighbors or acquaintances. I usually find that when I do the recommendation comes back and bites me in the butt.
Secondly, I don't do reviews of books I've read. Other readers rarely care for the opinion of some old geezer in his 70's.
Thirdly (and I've said this before) I NEVER read romance novels. Why read about something that is a distant memory, at best.
And with that said...
I can't recommend this book strongly enough! It kept me on the edge of my seat at times, and at other moments had me reaching for the tissue box. Every question I had after reading the first two books of this series (I refuse to call it a trilogy, as I'm hoping for just one more book!) was answered. Every character - even ones you'd forgotten about - is dealt with in a logical way...bringing their part of the story to a logical conclusion.
I absolutely loved this book! just like I loved the first two ("All My Love, Detrick" and "You Are My Sunshine"). One thing to remember, though...be sure and read the first two before starting "The Promised Land".
Like I said, I don't do reviews and I don't recommend books...so this isn't a review, it's just a few thoughts concerning a great read! and about the recommendation...let's just say you won't be sorry if you pick this one up!
Oh, and about my not reading romance novels...that still holds true...EXCEPT FOR BOOKS BY ROBERTA KAGAN!

Wonderful, wonderful!

I have a complicated relationship with Roberta Kagan's books. It is a love/hate relationship. I love to read them and hate that I read them so fast because I cannot put them down! She puts you right into the lives of the characters so that you feel like you would recognize them if you met them on the street. The people are like family that you are proud to be connected to. Her writing is educational and endearing. You really need to start at the beginning with All My Love Detrick so you have the story from the beginning. Thank you for such wonderful books.

Repercussions of the Holocaust never end...

This is the third book of the series and I am still attached to the characters—those whose lives the author still tells us about and those newly introduced. Ms. Kagan places the characters and important circumstances throughout the plot in a manner that, if you've read the previous books of the series, refreshes your memory without boring you, and, meanwhile, introduces them to the reader who is knew to the series.

She beautifully weaves together the horror of what these people endured, the strength that kept them alive, and the reward that finally awaited them, all the while carrying an additional thread of the "current events" as they pertained to the main plot.

Sometimes I felt like the story was dying down only to be reignited either right where I was or somewhere else quite unexpectedly. There are a few characters whose use to the overall plot seemed to have "expired", and I found myself wondering why words were being wasted on them; but I think they will be more meaningful in the next book, "To Be an Israeli"—which I cannot wait to see published!

The Holocaust in Historical Fiction has become one of my favorite genres thanks to authors such as Roberta Kagan. Even though the story is fictional, a good amount of factual history is there to continually surprise you. In this case, the surprises are not good, but the knowledge of them is! It never ceases to horrify me that there were—and still are—"people" in the world who carry such hate in their souls!

About the Author
Dorothy Scallan, also known under her pen name of Doris Sheridan, wrote through the Catholic Press for a great number of years. She contributed many articles, including editorials, short stories, essays, and more. Aware and concerned of the moral quality of modern literature, she also contributed book reviews for years, which won her the praise of the U.S. American Catholic hierarchy. Miss Scallan was the author of The Golden Arrow, The Holy Man of Tours, and The Whole World Will Love Me. The latter, her biography of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, was published in 1954.

THE WHOLE WORLD WILL LOVE ME

For all those who love the Little Flower this is a must have. Written in the style of a novel rather than an autobiography her whole life is covered from beginning to end. Also I thought this presentation of her life is more down to earth than others I have read and it allowed me to feel more deeply her internal struggles with her faith.

Anything about St. Therese is good

This biography on St. Therese is written like historical fiction. It is well researched, but the claim on the back cover is very subjective - "probably the best biography of St. Therese, The Little Flower, that has ever been written." It's good, but it doesn't come close to ISC Publications "The Story of a Soul" Study Edition. "The Whole World Will Love Me" is a good book to give to a person unfamiliar with St. Therese, as it "links all the elements of her life into one intimate, flowing and absolutely enthralling story" (review of the back cover). For a serious Theresian, this book remains a nice addition to your collection, but you won't learn anything new here.

Dorothy Scallan wrote this charming biography of St. Therese in the form of a novel and it begins years before the saint's birth. Zelie Martin, who was an amazing woman in her own right wanted to be nun but was turned down. Louis Martin wanted to be a priest in his youth but was also turned down. Although disappointed they later realized years later after meeting one another that their vocation was marriage all along. They married fairly late in life and Therese would be their ninth and last child. The breast cancer which would eventually take Zelie's life had already manifested itself before Therese was born.

Dorothy Scallan filled this book with little known details. Interestingly enough Zellie Martin had a great regard for Saint Bernadette and travelled to Lourdes shortly before her death. Later Therese upon entering Carmel was deeply influenced by a book called the Golden Arrow written by a saintly fellow Carmelite. Some books make it seem like St. Therese just sort of accidentally stumbled into sainthood or they make it seem like her path was easy. It wasn't. The Whole World Will Love shows that the sought out holiness and poured herself into her vocation.

This is a lovely biography and makes a nice companion to Story of a Soul.

Poorly written, poorly edited

The writing in this text is often redundant, too verbose and poorly edited. There are several typographical errors and it just doesn't need to be as long as it is. It's funny that the book is called "Teaching Music in HIGHER EDUCATION" because it seems like more often than not the authors recommend treating students like children. Unless you are required to buy this text for a class I would stay away. Even if you are required to buy this text for a class, try to just borrow it from the library if your institution has it on reserve.

A Must Read for Everyone

Robert Bruce’s book, Astral Dynamics: The Complete Book Of Out-Of-Body Experience, is the second edition of his groundbreaking book, Astral Dynamics published in 1999. Both books are veritable bibles of out-of-body experience and cover the subject in incredible detail. Bruce’s book is about how to visit the astral planes and what one will find there, if “there” is the correct term. Astral Dynamics is a step by step guide on how to achieve a controlled out-of-body experience (OBE) that according to Bruce is achievable by virtually everyone. He not only tells you how to get there, Bruce guides you over the pitfalls and describes the wondrous sights ahead.
Basic Themes:
Bruce begins by describing the anatomy of consciousness and why OBE’s are even possible. He describes the various zones that make up the other dimensions starting with the “real-time zone” which exists just next to the physical world and shares some physical traits with it. He goes on to the deepest planes in the Astral zones.
The “projectable double” is Bruce’s term for the part of us that actually does the OBE. Bruce provides a thorough anatomy of the human energy body and why we can have an OBE. His detailed description includes the three basic aspects of the projectable double. He goes on to explain that children and animals project regularly and naturally and that some people are forcefully projected in near death experiences.
Bruce covers the mind split phenomena that occurs during an OBE and the difficulty of retaining a memory of the experience upon awakening. Astral sight is discussed in detail along with methods to control this sometimes difficult phenomenon. The issue of waking paralysis is covered. At the end of part one Bruce writes of the Higher Self and how affirmations can be used to elicit an OBE.
The second part of the book concerns the energy body, its anatomy and how to enhance one's energy body. Bruce provides detailed instructions on exercises that enhance one's ability to do energy work through tactile imaging. This section is unique to Bruce and he elucidates the development of energy work to a fine degree reminiscent of the ancient Chinese masters and their descriptions of Qigong energy development. Bruce covers possible problems one may encounter during energy work and how to fix them.
The third section of this work covers core skills used in the attainment of an OBE. Bruce speaks of relaxation techniques, controlling the ever chaotic mind and achieving the altered state. His detail makes it easy for anyone to have this interesting experience.
The fourth section covers how to prepare for the OBE experience and what one will actually experience when going into the OBE. Exercises that enhance the ability to have an OBE and detailed techniques are discussed. Bruce also talks about the problem of suddenly exiting the OBE without intending to do so. Another difficulty he discusses is the issue of the mind-split. The mind-split makes it difficult to remember the shadow memories of the OBE. We all have OBEs but do not remember them because of the difficulty of retaining the shadow memory.
Bruce goes on to describe the astral form when it is in motion. This presents some interesting phenomena when compared to physical motion. It is as though one has to relearn how to move in the astral form. Along with learning how to walk, one must learn how to fly and pass through solid matter. Distance is not an issue and can be traversed at will. Even going to other planets is possible.
The fifth part of Bruce's book talks about the Akashic connection. Since the astral planes are unknown to our conscious minds, navigating while in the OBE is confusing and sometimes scary. The structure of the astral planes and their relationship to universal consciousness are discussed in detail. This gives the OBE traveler some sign posts to navigate by. The concept of energy cords and how the projected body is connected to the physical body are discussed.
The Akashic records appear to be a recording of all information past, present and future. They can be accessed in an OBE as well as by persons with clairvoyant and psychic abilities. Bruce discusses how to access these records and how to find what you are looking for.
Part six covers strange astral phenomena. Bruce talks about reality fluctuations, confusing effects, melting body parts and vision reversal. Higher dimensional levels and their aspects are discussed along with astral beings and wildlife. The issue of fear during an OBE is discussed as well as how to handle it.
Writing Style:
Robert Bruce has a gift in his ability to take nebulous ideas and express them in a manner anyone can understand. His task is especially difficult with this subject matter. Bruce takes concepts that exist beyond the average person’s experience and expresses them in a way that makes us want to experience the astral realms through an OBE.

This book should be read by several groups of people. Healers will find the information especially useful to expand their understanding of the energetic levels and how to expand their sensitivity. This book is enlightening and encouraging. It expands one’s concept of reality and opens the door to spiritual expansion. We are all part of a single reality, and Bruce’s illumination on the subject makes one feel connected to the universe and the warmth and promise it has to offer.
I love the fact that Bruce takes the spiritual and gives concrete instructions on how to enhance one’s ability to perceive the spiritual. The illustrations are very informative and clarify concepts that are difficult to envision. The illustrations themselves are works of art by anyone’s estimation. What I like most is the step by step manner Bruce presents his material to make it simple to understand and follow.
Astral Dynamics: The Complete Book Of Out-Of-Body Experience lives up to its title. It is definitely a complete and thorough guide to developing one’s energy and perception in order to experience an out of body experience. It is also a wonderful guide through the spiritual realm.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. If even the strictest skeptic would follow the instructions provided in this book, they would become believers in mankind’s infinite nature.

*The* Definitive book on OBE's

Ever since I was 10 and read about Nostradamus practicing astral projection, the subject has fascinated me. Throughout my teens I read several books regarding the practice and always attempted - with little success to exit my body. The problem with these works was that for every 100 pages on theory there would be 1 page of tecnique, which said little more than 'imagine standing outside of your body'. When I found Robert Bruce's work, those figures were reversed and all written content was what you needed to do and why, in concise step by step points. This work was Astral Dynamics, and is imo the greatest book there is on OBE's.

Robert brings OBE's out of the esoteric and into the logical and scientific, and explains in simple terms what one needs to do in order to leave their body. Deep physical relaxation, a clear mind, and an exit tecnique Bruce says are key, and he takes you through these neccesary skills in a down to earth, non-mystical way.

On top of this, Bruce developed a unique energy development tool not unlike the ancient systems of the east, but much more modern, accessable, and without the baggage of thousands of years of tradition. New energy ways, or NEW as he calls it, is something anyone can try and feel results with in 5 minutes, and whether one's even into OBE's, NEW is something they could benefit from, by connecting to the subtle layers of ones being usually reserved for yoga masters or high level martial artists. Its exactly the kind of information our materially-driven society needs.

Several weeks of practicing NEW bought me a gamut of fascinating experiences from body vibrations, deep states of trance and strobing lights behind my closed eyes; all of which furthered my understanding of how natural a thing OBE is. And since that time, any OBE's I have had, I've always referred back to Roberts work in order to make sense of what was happening, such as the melting hands phenomena when one looks at their hands whilst out of body.

So if you want to develop OBE, using NEW is an excellent tool. No other literature on the subject had ever, or has since given me such results. As knowing I need to empty my mind, relax my body and stimulate my energy centers tells me a lot more than quoteunquote 'imagine standing outside of your body'.

Along with the core skills and energy methods, Bruce outlines the common questions and pitfalls of the would-be projector, such as waking paralysis, achieving an altered state, exit tecniques, navigating whilst out of body, what to do, where to go, and working with the higher self. He also talks about the structure of the non-physical realms, heavenly dimensions and the nature of the afterlife. Not in a religious sense, but with full experience of how the dimensional levels are structured.

So, coming from a long time student of OBE's, Astral Dynamics is really the only book you need on the subject, cos imo, there's no better teacher out there.

If you are interested in astral projection or spiritual development this is a great buy

I am writing this review having purchased this and other Robert Bruce books - I cannot express how grateful I am that there are teachers out there who are willimg to share their knowledge in such a well written informative way.
You can tell by reading this book that the author really knows what he is talking about it's a real handbook for guidance to explore your greater self.
I have read many books on this subject by some other great teachers ie Robert Monroe, William Buhlman etc and I think that this book is a standout and a must read if this is your thing.
I have the other editions also and this one is a great update.
