Great for beginner

I'm a hardware person who have been dealing with RF devices for almost 10 years. Recently I was commissioned to make a MFC based Visual C++ code to open and communicate the serial port based liquid crystal filter. Since I was not a computer science student, this was really beyond what I expect. After I bought this book with Ivor Horton's Visual C++ 2008, my work was like..'a morning coffee.' It has the line to line explanations, old C++ to VC++ conversions...etc. If you need different language like MATLAB, VB, Labview, it will cover them, too.

Some people said this book's example is so specific to follow; I don't think so. If you need to open serial port with VC++, that would mean you also have to make some hardware devices or analyze the hardware stuff by yourself.
Even if I didn't use the example provided by this book, this book gave me the enough example how to test the serial port communication. You can apply this to your own work.

For testing or making some serial devices, you basically need a multimeter, female or male serial ports, some cables..etc.

Also, you may have to configure your computer's bios setup.

A necessary reference for anyone writing serial interfaces

This book offers a very good and exceptionally practical explanation of how to program PC serial ports. In my job, I have to write interfaces to serial devices, and this book gives me the information I need to make quick work of things no matter what language I am using. Within 2 hours I was able to have a running Visual C++ application reading and writing to a device connected to my COM port. The book goes beyond general concepts,with lots of sample code and detailed line-by-line instruction.

I recommend this book to the student who desires a complete understanding of serial ports, and to the engineer who needs to come rapidly up to speed on how to make use of serial ports in his applications.

The section regarding the hardware aspects of serial ports provides a good basis of understanding the terminology, and is particularly helpful in understanding all the different protocols that are out there. Also helpful was the explanation of the Windows API functions necessary for serial communication. The author also anticipates problems that may arise along the way and suggests ways to avoid them.

Good, but not great

This book allows you to quickly learn how to setup serial port communication in your code so you can read and write bytes on serial port.

However they don't really give you many examples of how to write real world code to interface with serial devices. So if you think this book will help you write the code to communicate with some kind of serial device think again. The book will only give you the foundation for reading and writing serial ports in different programming languages and operating systems. The section on Windows C++ (protected mode) is very limited and most of the information can be found on MSDN.

The most complicated part of serial programming is the two way communication. They only show examples of single threaded code and a Sputnik's sized blip on OVERLAPPED I\O. Overlapped IO is very important if you need real time two way serial communication where you are reading and writing at the same time your program is performing other tasks. Because you dont always want to block your thread on reads and writes.

This book is one of the only book out there that targets serial communication. Overall the book is good and covers a history of serial devices, how to establish communication, and reading\writing bytes on the port. The examples in the book are clear however they lack what I would consider real world application.

Interest rate swaps and their derivatives have become an integral part of the fixed income market, but many of the pricing and risk management issues for these now mainstream products can only be learned on a trading floor. While there are many books on fixed income and interest rate derivatives, they generally suffer from being either too elementary and bond-centric, mentioning swaps in passing, or too technical and focused on exotics and the myriad implementation issues and algorithms used to tackle them.

Rather than focusing on exotics, Interest Rate Swaps and Their Derivatives thoroughly covers the mainstream products—swaps, flow options, Bermudans, semi-exotics—showing the common pricing techniques while also explaining how to generalize the concepts to more nuanced products.

Author Amir Sadr, experienced as a quant, trader, financial software developer, and academic in the fixed income field, begins by presenting plain-vanilla swaps as an extension of fixed rate bonds—revealing how techniques for pricing these instruments are a generalization of similar methods used for pricing bonds and repos, and for the most part involve the concepts of financing cost, discount factors, and projection of forward curves. He then moves on to cover the options markets for flow products, including options on futures, caps and floors, and European swaptions—with detailed attention to the actual trading practice of these products. Sadr explains how, as with any option product, the pricing and risk management of these requires dealing with volatility as the main risk factor—and he shows that one does not need to have a PhD in math to understand options. Sadr presents risk-neutral valuation as the fundamental pricing paradigm for derivatives, and illustrates the core idea of dynamic replication in a simple binomial setting. About the Author
AMIR SADR, PhD, has experience as a quant, trader, financial software developer, and academic in fixed income markets. He traded options and exotics at HSBC in New York from 2005 to 2006 and traded at the proprietary desk for Greenwich Capital Markets (GCM) for four years prior to that. Sadr also has experience at Morgan Stanley as a vice president in the derivatives products group where he traded interest rate derivatives and exotics. Since 1996, Sadr has served as an adjunct professor at New York University in the Department of Finance and Accounting.

Great practical overview of derivatives market

The book fills a great niche in between very simple overviews and the very mathematical oriented work. If you need to know things like day counts for different indices, CMS convexity adjustments and a general overview over the different measures used to price derivatives, the different interest rate models etc. this is the book to own.

Comparing with other books on swap subject, this book offer a good balance between clearness of the concepts and just enough technical details to handle the real world problem. Even after 20 years in the industry, this book completed many gaps in my knowledge base. Jan Van Sickle, PhD, PLS, has been a licensed professional land surveyor for 31 years and is currently licensed in seven states. Dr. Van Sickle’s diverse experience lends itself to a variety of surveying, geomatics, and GIS projects. He has published three GIS and GPS textbooks and has advised many companies, including Microsoft, Jeppesen, and Hess, in geospatial matters. Dr. Van Sickle served as the GIS director at Quest Communications, where he led the effort to build the GIS spatial database for the company’s worldwide network. He is a senior lecturer at the Pennsylvania State University and has been a featured speaker at many conferences.

I used this book to study from my Colorado LSI and PLS test that I took with the NCEES. The study material and problems in this book really prepare you for the test and use real world survey examples. Now that I am licensed PLS I will always keep this book in my library for reference. There is ton of good survey examples and it covers all the necessary subjects such as Boundary law, legal descriptions, Photogrammetry, surveying math, the PLSS and many other topics. I highly recommend this book if you are studying to take your surveying exam.

About the Author
Ernest Callenbach, who also wrote Ecotopia, grew up in rural central Pennsylvania, attended the University of Chicago, and has lived in Berkeley, California, since 1954. He edited natural history, science, art, and film books for the University of California Press. He now devotes full time to writing (his newest book is Ecology: A Pocket Guide) and lecturing; he gardens ardently, has two compost bins, and walks a lot.

A Green Globe

Ecotopia Emerging is a novel of ideas written by Ernest Callenbach. The main idea of this book is, Callenbach uses a setting like our modern day civilized world, with pollutions, contaminations of streams, rivers, and ground waters by industrial toxic wastes. Doubtfully, after several years of this continuous contaminated way of living, he came up with a powerful and dedicated movement to preserve our future generations. In the book, the used Vera Allwen, a legislator as the organizer and the leader of the movement, assisted by a devoted Marissa D'Amico, her mother Laura, who organizes a group of Cancer victims to fight against plants making Carcinogenic chemicals. Finally, Lou Swift, a bright physics student who invented a unique Solar cell that would end the dependence on polluting fossil energy. Never the less, this movement was also joined by thousand of people, mostly commoners, who shared the same vision and values of their natural and traditional environment.

In the first three chapters of Ecotopia Emerging, the movement came up with rules similar to the Ten Commandments and the Bill of Rights called the "No More" list. It reads: No extinction of species, nuclear plants, manufacturing of carcinogenic or mutagenic substances. No adulterating in food, no discrimination of sex, race, age, religion or ethnic group. No private cars, and advertiser controllers, no limited liability corporations, no absentee ownership, no growth in population. Some of the rules were thought to be considered controversial in the public eyes, by some of the movement's members. For example, no private cars and growth in population. However, they stick to their rules and went to work by exposing government and private industries' evil deeds to the public for not making the earth a safer place to dwell. Drastically, the movement was popular due to it appearances on major TVs and in newspapers. In fact, they made their won TV channel for the convenience of their members who were in remote places

Lou was a bright physics student who love dating, having sex, and working on her cell. One day after school, she opened her lab door and discovered that one of her cell had magical ingredients, which was rain and seawater, chlorides, and bromides. She couldn't find the replica of that exact magical cell, after series of experiments. She became frustrated and kicked the legs of the cell. She opened the cell's hut to look for any damage; one of the switches had fallen closed. Then she remembered that when she discovered the original cell, a switch had also fallen closed also, and one of the cells had salt water in it, it creates electrolytic reaction like chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and other compounds. Finally she did the experiment over, and then came up with the results like the original cell. She rushed the news to her father, Roger, he was proud of her. Since Lou wanted the cell to be do-it-yourself, to the public, it scared the hell out of companies who had been spending money on similar research and couldn't find the answer. Many threats from the FBI, oil companies were to Lou and her family.

In the end, after continuous battle with the government and other organizations, the survivalist party finally separated themselves from the union, but it wasn't easy, the only reason why they won and successfully gained their independent country was the U.S military troops that were camped in Nevada was moved to the Middle East, due to immediate needs for troops over there.

Get Off the Grid

In Ecotopia Emerging it's important for the United States to find an alternative energy source because oil will soon run out. Instead of trying to find new sources, the U.S. goes to war with other places to fight over their oil. But even if they succeeded that oil will eventually run out as well. There are characters in Ecotopia Emerging who take a stand and think outside the box. They create phenomenal alternative energy sources that could get the whole world "off the grid."

The main alternative energy source spoke of in the book is a solar cell created by Lou Swift. Lou is just a high school student who is very interested in biology. She wanted to create a source of energy which would be inexpensive and could be used by all people. In several months the cell is complete and Lou realizes that it will be very helpful in assisting others with "getting off the grid".

Another energy source used in this book was very interesting and creative. Ralph Burns, who is a farmer, was tired of high gasoline prices. It was becoming more and more expensive to operate his equipment. He comes up with to use a mixture of alcohol to run his machines rather than gasoline. After some research at a local university he put his plan into action along with some friends. The plan worked and now Burns and others who completed this project are now gas free!

Windmills are used in current times but also in this novel. People have often over looked windmills but they are a very adequate energy source. They run off of wind which is abundant all around the world, some place more than others. Windmills are also pollution free which is very environmental friendly.

These are only three other means of energy but with creative minds and research lot of other energy sources can be created as well. All it takes is time and effort. If a seventeen year old could do it why can others? The benefits would be beyond measure and the environment would definitely be cleaner and safer.

A Visionary's Hope For a Brighter Future

Perhaps the most valuable aspects of Earnest Callenbach's novel Ecotopia Emerging are the points at which he expresses ideas that would facilitate a better society. Throughout the book, he focuses on the Ecotopians use of alternative energy and transportation. His ideas are almost non-fictional and could very well apply to modern day society.

The novel begins with Lou Swift, a 17 year old female, discovering that she has invented a solar cell. Callenbach uses the solar cell as the answer to many of modern society's problems concerning the waste of electricity and other natural resources. He also proposes that we use windmills and hydroelectricity. In these respects, Callenbach is prophetic.

Throughout the novel, italicized paragraphs denote Callenbach's real purposes. He uses them to go beyond the view of a fictional world and apply his visions to society as we know it. If the italicized parts of the novel were left alone, Ecotopia Emerging would be closer to a manifesto than to a novel. But this is not the case; Callenbach gives us a very clear background for his ideas. He uses the most "green" part of the country as his setting. Still today, northern California, Oregon, and Washington are the most liberal parts of the country. In fact, it seems very likely that this part of the country might someday rise up against the rest of the country. Ecotopia is not entirely composed of radical environmentalists. Characters such as Whitey Whitehead assume the role of what most people would call a typical American. Every story needs an antagonist, and besides the national government, Whitey Whitehead is just that. He is enraged at the idea of giving up his right to drive. While crop-dusting, he pretends he is fighting again in the Vietnam War. He lacks respect for women, the environment, and the rest of the world in general.

One might find this novel slightly preachy, but Callenbach gets his point across without boring the reader. He is inventive, realistic (most of the time), and has written a novel that0 America could learn a lot from. Ecotopia Emerging is a strong novel with morally-pleasant themes and ideas that deserve a chance.
