Val Shapiro has a secret she's desperate to keep - she's lost her slayer powers.

As the new guardian of the Encyclopedia Magicka, Val expected the books to give her powers to replace those that disappeared after she lost her "V card" to Shade. But the encyclopedia exacts a price for every spell, making the job of guardian a tricky proposition.

When a rogue demon kidnaps Val's roommate, Gwen, and Micah, leader of the San Antonio Demon Underground, Val is plunged into the middle of a Solomon's Choice. The rogue wants the dangerously potent Encyclopedia Magicka in exchange for her friends' lives; the succubus leader of the Demon Underground in Austin is demanding the books be destroyed rather than let them fall into the wrong hands and wants Shade for herself, swearing to do everything she can to prevent Val's turning over the books.

The kidnapping isn't the only crisis Val faces. She's been betrayed by Fang. Demons and vampires are disappearing. The vamps of the New Blood Movement are forcing Val to keep the terms of her agreement to work for them to combat this new threat. The Demon Underground is challenging Micah's leadership, and everyone is depending on a now-powerless Val to set things right.

Val needs all the help she can get. Even if it means forgiving Fang and spending time with a dangerously sexy cowboy-vampire.

Love/Hate Relationship!
By Hooked Me
As an English teacher I am always looking for lit that will interest my students outside of class. In that process...I myself got hooked on your Val Shapiro series. I ate up the first three when I discovered them months ago. Then...I waited and waited and waited for Make Me to come out. I read it in one sitting! Well, I gotta say I hated it so much that I loved it--let me explain. SPOILER ALERT!! I hated that Val was left with absolutely NO personal life at the end of the book...I hated that there was NO physical contact (excluding the hot kiss with Austin)...I hated that Shade changed so drastically...I hated that Micah and Gwen didn't progress into anything more than friendship. Yep--I loved it all! Left me begging...needing more from the next book. CAN'T wait for the next one---and am hoping Val will get more from her life!

Book 4 in an exciting "New Adult" urban fantasy series with a "kick-ass" heroine
By Kate McMurry
In this fourth book in the Demon Underground, New Adult, urban fantasy series, "kick-ass" heroine, 18-year-old Val Shapiro, is hiding a dangerous secret. After losing her virginity to her handsome, demon boyfriend, Shade, her slayer powers vanished. She had hoped that as the latest guardian of the Encyclopedia Magicka, these enormously powerful books would offer her new magical abilities to replace those she'd surrendered for love, but so far, that has not happened. These books take away more than they give, because there is a price to pay for using any spell they offer.

While Val is still floundering without any magical resources to protect herself or anyone else, her roommate Gwen and her mentor Micah, the incubus leader of the San Antonio Demon Underground, are kidnapped by a rogue demon, who commands Val to surrender the Encyclopedia Magicka to him as the price for her friends' lives. As Val contemplates the nightmare such an exchange would produce, the gorgeous, succubus leader of the Austin Demon Underground arrives, insisting that the deadly books be destroyed to prevent their falling into the wrong hands. She also employs her succubus powers to bind Shade to her, and a devastated Val can do nothing to prevent it.

Meanwhile, demons and vampires begin disappearing in San Antonio, and Val is torn between the needs of the vampire and demon communities. The vampires of the New Blood Movement demand that Val uphold her oath to work for them as they search for the perpetrator of these threats, but there is dangerous turmoil in the Demon Underground without Micah in charge. As if all that weren't enough, Val's best friend and sidekick, Fang the talking hellhound, chooses this moment to unaccountably betray her.

Val, as always, is a valiant, determined, very active protagonist, and she has plenty of exciting, scary problems to deal with in this latest action-filled installment of the Demon Underground series. Val inhabits a compelling, magical world, and I thoroughly enjoy reading about that world and experiencing the many intriguing subcharacters inhabiting it.

Poor Val can't ever seem to catch a break in the romance department, but since this is not a series that focuses a great deal of attention on romance as an end in and of itself, I won't downgrade my score for this novel for not delivering a strong paranormal-romance subplot. Instead, I am giving it a high score for a great deal of success in its main focus: relentless warrior, Val, giving her all to the goal of defeating scary villains against impossible odds.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book through Net Galley.

I rate this book as follows:

Heroine: 5 stars
Fantasy World-Building: 5 stars
Writing: 5 stars
Action-Adventure/Thriller Plot: 4 stars
Overall: 5 stars

Setting the (next) Stage
By Cedar Creek Reader
If the action in the first three Val Shapiro books was modeled like the Seaside Park roller-coaster, slow, anxious climb up to the top, followed by a screaming, rollicking plummet to the bottom, then Make Me is like the the Seaside Park Carousel, goes around pleasantly in a circle, nice ride, moderate risk, moderate reward. The author seems to be transitioning from plots which were a constant surprise as Val discovered something brand new about herself, her abilities, and her place in the world, to plots in which she will have a permanent place as the Paladin (Sergeant at Arms) for the Demon Underground. By the end of the ride, she has toppled Dina, the errant, Austin, TX, Underground leader, helped knock off Amodeus, another super dangerous mage-demon and managed to secure Micah's place as the Underground leader back home in San Antonio as well as hold onto her day job as Keeper of the Encyclopedia.

So, not as exciting as the first three books and probably not the best of the four to be the first one you read, but still a very likable heroine who now can go on to perhaps less frantic, but more mature roles. I think Val is a character well worth waiting for in future books.

No One Can Resist the Call
By Michael D. Winkle
A small, loving family faces ruin due to its inability to mesh with harsh, workaday New York City. Bob Duke, the traditional breadwinner, a poetic, impractical man, reaches the end of his rope (and money) and seeks any out. The "out" comes when a wolf in Central Park Zoo catches his gaze and "captures" him. On a business trip to Atlanta, Bob transforms temporarily into a wolf, wreaking havoc in a hotel. Upon his return to New York he changes again, more-or-less permanently. This metamorphosis marks the beginning of a crazy rollercoaster ride leading from a filthy dog pound to the Canadian forests as cops, SWAT teams, hunters, coy-dogs, and everyone else rise up to hunt him.
"If only he could talk! 'This is all so silly,' he would say. 'I'm about the least offensive person you could meet.'" (p. 205, TOR ed.) If The Wild is a horror novel, the horror is learning how truly helpless and terrified one would be, trapped, fully aware, in an animal's form. Bob can't talk or write, his hands are now unmanipulative paws, and virtually anyone who sees him tries to kill him. His plight is described with the poignancy of Olaf Stapledon's bucolic novel Sirius, but the pursuit of Bob Duke races along with the frenzy of a Jackie Chan movie.
Bob Duke, used to pate de foie gras and caviar, must eat diseased rats and Drano-soaked garbage. He fights dogs, wolves, a child-rapist, and an extremely unfriendly bear. He nearly drowns, freezes, and starves in the woods. Meanwhile, wife Cindy and son Kevin search for him, aided by a tired old Native American shaman and a Dana-Scully-type psychiatrist. I have read many stories of shape-shifters; such characters usually are loners from the start. (In Andre Norton novels like The Jargoon Pard, for instance, the heroes are outsiders, nearly friendless if not actually hated by their peers.) In The Wild, Bob Duke's family suffers almost as much anguish and pain as Bob himself, and their life on the run is as hellish as his. This is an obvious course to take but one I don't remember reading in a lycanthropy novel before.
What I have read often enough is that the animal's spirit somehow pollutes the human soul -- intelligence fades, he/she becomes bloodthirsty, psychotic, or downright evil. The Wild describes a perfect melding of human intelligence with wolf instinct and supernormal senses -- Bob can hunt down a deer and simultaneously feel sorry he has to kill "Bambi". "And he would die having had one of the highest of experiences: to be a raw animal, in the body of an animal, with all his human consciousness intact." (p. 304) The human mind is enhanced, not soiled, by the lupine.
There are scenes of wolf dominance-submission in The Wild that may offend some readers, and Bob Duke is such a loser as a human that some may not sympathize with him. None of this has lessened The Wild's impact on me. It became my favorite book the moment I began it, and nine years later I doubt anything will threaten its supremacy. I will simply follow it "deep into the freedom and safety of the wild." (the end)

The Wild - no ordinary werewolf novel
By Erin
The First thing that should be noted, gotten out of the way first, is to emphasize this is no ordinary werewolf novel.

Nope, you don’t have furry man-beasts sniffing out human flesh here, folks. You also don’t have a constantly shifting creature raging against his inner impulses; there’s no moon watching here, no silver bullets to be dodged, and no strange herbs to devour to fend off any curses.

Characters are interesting and unique. It's not often you read about a protagonist who can't make it well in the real world. I loved this sense of realism!

Strieber writes with a heavy hand at times, spinning out colorful phrases. His wording is intriguing, his style serious. He does inject humor in the story when it’s needed, a type of irony, but does so in a way that seems to come naturally. At first his style was a bit hard for me to get into, but pretty soon I was wrapped up and began looking forward to it.

The wild, not your typical horror novel, one that devotes itself mainly to change, human nature, and acceptance, reads like a dark drama. It’s not a werewolf story per se, so don’t go in expecting this to be unleashed, but it’s a satisfying one nonetheless. For a change we needed a different bite of wolf in our horror; this may be what some have been waiting for.

Interesting twist on traditional werewolf legend.
By A Customer
Most people are familiar with horror stories about doomed person forced to turn into wolf/monster during the full moon and kill innocent people. The good news for Bob Duke, the protagonist of *The Wild* is that he does not become a traditional werewolf. The (initially) bad news is that he does turn into a wolf, and the transformation is permanent. As Duke gradually gets used to his new body,he comes to love the freedom of being a wild animal. Whitley Strieber has written a great work of imagination, showing the reader what it might be like to be a wolf with the sentience of a human being. Although most bookstores put *The Wild* in their horror sections, I think it is more a fantasy. The only drawback comes in the ending-I think it would have been nice if Strieber had shown greater faith in humanity.

The Cavalry of the Roman Republic, by Jeremiah B. McCall

In this original and revealing work, Jeremiah B. McCall challenges the generally accepted view of the Roman cavalry and explores the fundamental connections between war and society in republican Rome, c.300-100 BC.
McCall describes the citizen cavalry's equipment, tactics, and motivation in battle, and argues for its effectiveness in the field. This success is proof that it cannot finally have been disbanded for purely military reasons; he shows that victories in the law-courts, and lavish displays of wealth, came to supersede cavalry service as a way of building the reputations of the Roman elite.
The clear structure and fresh approach of the book, combining insights from both Roman military and social history, will be useful to readers at all levels of study.

First rate text on a little known subject
By Ben Kane
As many people know, information on the citizen cavalry of the mid Roman Republic is hard to come by. Ancient history, with its patchy details, is wide open to interpretation of one kind or another. Sometimes these interpretations become the accepted 'way things were', even if there's no real proof to back up the conclusions are made.

A case in point is the subject of this little volume, by Jeremiah McCall. Citizen cavalry, the Republic's staple mounted force from the fifth century BC until the first, had disappeared by the time of Julius Caesar and Pompey Magnus. Until this excellent text came along, the widely held belief was that Roman citizen cavalry had become inferior to the enemies it faced, and was therefore dispensed with.

As McCall cogently argues, there is no hard proof for this at all, and in fact, the evidence points to the Roman citizen cavalry being, for the most part, just as good as the enemies they faced. When they weren't - for example in the Second Punic War - changes were made. (This is when McCall moots that the much debated change of equipment and weaponry took place.) The theory he comes up with for the demise of the citizen cavalry is also sensible: that by the first century BC, the route to success, fame and fortune for young equestrians no longer began with service in the cavalry, but in the political world.

Just seven chapters long, this text is well-written and presented. There is an exhaustive set of notes at the back mentioning all its classical sources. With its well-made challenge to another common assumption about Rome, it's a 'must read' for anyone interested in the Roman Republic's armies. And the good news is that a paperback edition is scheduled for March 2011. Bringing the price down significantly will definitely make it worth purchasing.

Ben Kane, author of The Forgotten Legion.

Good, although not entirely convincing
By JPS
This is a short book - 150 pages of text, annexes included - but nevertheless a valuable one on the cavalry of the Roman Republic between 300 and 100 BC. Essentially, the author seeks to make three main points.

The first is that, contrary to an assumption initially surfaced by historians but never really demonstrated, Roman citizen and Italian allied cavalry were not inefficient. The second is that it was even able to adapt and evolve in order to keep being efficient and that its efficiency was largely due to its aggressive tactics based on Roman war ethos. The third is that the disappearance of Roman and Italian cavalry therefore did not happen because it was efficient but for other reasons that the author believes to have identified and following a period of particular stress on Roman manpower.

The main value of this little book is that the author has mustered sufficient elements on each of the points and conducted his investigation in such a way that he makes an intriguing, and often a very good case. A related item is that the author is however honest enough to recognise in a number of instances that the points he makes are often not backed by evidence simply because there isn't any. Even when the points seem very plausible or very likely, there are therefore interpretations or even speculations if you happen to dislike or disagree with them. What is interesting, however, is that there may be no less "speculative" than the statements which have become "conventional wisdom" and according to which Roman cavalry under the Republic was of poor quality because the Romans were no horsemen and that this is why Rome replaced Roman and Italian cavalry by auxiliaries drawn from conquered people such as the Spaniards, Gauls, Thracians or Batavians, to mention only those.

As the author demonstrates rather convincingly, the poor reputation earned by the Roman cavalry goes back to the Second Punic War where they were comprehensively defeated as the Tessin, at the battle of Trebia and then at Cannae. They also lost another cavalry engagement against the Macedonians but won just as comprehensively their cavalry battles at Zama and at Magnesia. This is where I had a bit of a problem with the author's views. While it is easy to agree with him that the defeats against Hannibal may have occurred partly because the Carthaginians were better lead and outnumbered the Roman and allied cavalry, this was not necessarily the case against the Macedonians. Moreover, and in all fairness, the Carthaginian cavalry was also heavily outnumbered at Zama, a point that Jeremiah McCall fails to make. As for the battle of Magnesia, the Romans did get the better of the Seleukid cavalry opposing them, but their numbers included some 700 Hellenistic heavy cavalry from Pergamon (out of 3000). Moreover, they were commanded by King Eumene and they won against an enemy cavalry that was already disordered. Again, none of the points are made by the author. Accordingly, the author is certainly correct in stating that the Roman cavalry may not have been as ineffective as some have made it out to be. However, neither was its track record as excellent as he may want to convince us.

One last comment here is that part of the discussion related to numbers is simply missing from the book. Simply put, one reason for the Romans to increasingly use non-Roman and then non-Italian cavalry is simply that they did not have enough of their own, regardless of whether it was as efficient as that of their opponents or not. This can be seen in the organisation of the legions of the Republic, with the Romans only Fielding 300 citizen cavalry per legion while requiring their Italian allies to field twice or three times more than them. Even that, however, was not necessarily enough, with Scipio making use of allied Numidians at Zama and Roman generals having use of Hellenistic allied cavalry in Greece and Asia Minor during the second century.

The second point made by the author is about the Roman and Italian cavalry's ability to adapt and, more precisely, to become armoured cavalry after Cannae while still preserving its aggressive tactics of fighting hand-to-hand.

Here, the author essentially assumes that Roman and Italian cavalry were essentially unarmoured at least up to the battle of Cannae included (that is up to 216 BC) and that as a result of "lessons learnt" from this defeat against their Carthaginian opponents, they adopted body armour. This is where the author's assumptions become rather unconvincing. As the author shows very well, both Roman and Italian cavalrymen belonged to the elites of their respective cities, as had been the case throughout Antiquity in many other civilisations, if only because having a horse was expensive and therefore limited to those who could afford it. A similar comment can be made about body armour. It was also costly and also reserved under the Middle Republic to those who could afford it. To try to justify and explain why Roman and Latin cavalry would lack body armour while their Greek, Macedonian and Carthaginian opponents did not, the author is then obliged to come with rather unconvincing explanations about their special tactics of often fighting dismounted, and the handicap that metallic body armour would represent in doing so. There are, however, three and perhaps even four issues which the author fails to discuss or even mention.

First, while Roman and Latin cavalry may have avoided wearing metallic armour which could be burdensome and cramp their ability to mount and dismount during hand to hand engagements, especially against other cavalry, this does not necessarily imply that they were not wearing any body armour. They may very well have had leather or linen cuirasses, for instance. They certainly had the means to equip themselves with them and their status, on which the author insists so much, would also probably ensure that they were as best equipped as they could.

Second, the whole case for Roman and allied cavalry's ability and willingness to fight on horseback and to dismount and fight on foot is also unconvincingly argued. While there may have been cases where this happened during skirmishes, the sources do not really help to identify them. Contrary to the author's statement, it is not certain that this occurred at Cannae, for instance. Moreover, and contrary to what the author claims, the advantages that could be obtained by dismounting part of one's light cavalry to fight against enemy cavalry in an open melee are not as one sided as they are made to be. The risks, which are not mentioned, were simply to be knocked down by the enemy horses, or even trampled if these were trained to do so or unable to avoid the obstacle.

A third issue is the impression that the author, in his eagerness to make his point, comes up with a somewhat artificial and simplistic divide between Roman and Italian cavalry, who are presented as willing or even eager for hand-to-hand fighting, and their enemies who almost seem to have preferred javelin throwing and fighting. The points about Roman "heroic" fighting, and the benefits associated with outstanding bravery are well made. The very positive effects that this could have for young bluebloods' reputations and future political careers are clear and, in the case of rare very well made. One cannot help wonder, however, to what extent this was not also the case for Greek citizen cavalry or Gallic nobles. Neither seems to have been exactly timid or particularly reluctant to fight their enemies up close.

A fourth point where there is some uncertainty concerns Roman and Italian cavalry's arms, equipment and tactics before and after the alleged reform. From a somewhat obscure passage in one of the surviving sources, the author concludes that this equipment, in particular the smallish and flimsy shield and a rather weak spear, were of poor quality and therefore replaced. Rather than depicting such equipment as inadequate per se, as the author does, its replacement could simply illustrate the shift from light to heavier cavalry.

Finally, there is the author's third contention. He quite plausibly identifies the disappearance of Roman and Allied cavalry and their replacement by (non-Italian) auxiliaries with the Social War and the huge constraints this placed on the Romans. He also explains in a very interesting and convincing way why this emergency measure was never reversed by showing that, by the first century BC, Roman and Italian elites no longer needed to display "heroic" deeds in order to get noticed. Good rhetoric as a lawyer, patronage together with pots of money, were enough to get elected.

This part and the one describing the traditional warlike ethos of the Roman and Italian aristocracies are perhaps the most convincing of the book. The others, even if less so, were nevertheless thought provoking and interesting, even when speculative. Four stars.

Great, consice book. Has everything you need from it's big brother "Mastery".

Excellent summary for those wanting to brush up on the finer points of the main book. Also, great for those more interested in the "meat and potatoes" than in the stories that go along with the idea. Happy to own both versions of this book.

Perfect refresher! But some ink problems.
By Nathan Fairchild
I love the smaller size of this edition. I believe a new reader would get more out of reading the full-size edition, but for those who have already read that regular edition this is a great copy to keep on you to read as a refresher.

My complaint with all of these "concise editions" of Robert Greene's books (as I have two) is that the ink is not complete on some of the words throughout the book. For instance, the word "this" on one of the pages has the lower half of the letter "t" missing. This occurs on most pages throughout the book - and isn't resigned just to the letter "t." While I have yet to read a passage where the meaning was obscured as a result of incomplete ink, it is noticeable and distracting every time you come across such errors. I wouldn't have thought this to be a problem in modern day book presses.

The Short Story: A Critical Introduction, by Valerie Shaw

Throughout this text, Valerie Shaw addresses two key questions: 'What are the special satisfactions afforded by reading short stories?' and 'How are these satisfactions derived from each story's literary techniques and narrative strategies?'. She then attempts to answer these questions by drawing on stories from different periods and countries - by authors who were also great novelists, like Henry James, Flaubert, Kafka and D.H. Lawrence; by authors who specifically dedicated themselves to the art of the short story, like Kipling, Chekhov and Katherine Mansfield; by contemporary practitioners like Angela Carter and Jorge Luis Borges; and by unfairly neglected writers like Sarah Orne Jewett and Joel Chandler Harris.

From the perspective of the psychiatrist
By Jerry
A strange, stimulating journey! A psychiatrist narrates this collection of loosely connected case studies about his patients, involving group therapy sessions, individual sessions, and discussions between the clinical staff about their patients. Most of the chapters begin by introducing new patients who have a bizarre set of symptoms that the doctor and staff try to make sense of, resulting in unusual disorders I’d not heard about before, facts about the patient’s history that helped reveal their symptoms, and a few mysteries that weren’t entirely cleared up in my mind.

The narrator/doctor did a good job of showing what I imagine are the rewards and frustrations of treating psychological disorders, and didn’t shy away from pointing out his own mistakes and biases. It reminded me somewhat of the HBO drama In Treatment, but in a hospital setting and greater focus on how the patients’ physical symptoms played a role in their problems.

I found most of the stories sad by themselves, but by the end of the book it had risen to a more hopeful note, as it becomes clear that few people come completely “cured.” The better standard is whether people can improve enough to return to the live they want to live. Interesting to hear the thoughts of the doctor about what I assume are true case studies. Definitely recommended!

The Carpenter's Gift: A Christmas Tale about the Rockefeller Center Tree, by David Rubel

This new classic Christmas gift book "brings together two great traditions: the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and the neighbor-helping-neighbor program of Habitat for Humanity." Opening in Depression-era New York City, The Carpenter's Gift tells the story of eight-year-old Henry and his father selling Christmas trees. They give a Christmas tree to construction workers building Rockefeller Center and celebrate together. Through the kindness of the construction workers and neighbors, Henry gets his wish for a nice, warm home to replace his family's drafty shack. He plants a pinecone from that first Rockefeller Center Tree. As an old man, Henry repays the gift by donating the enormous tree that has grown from that pinecone. After bringing joy to thousands as the Rockefeller Center tree, its wood will be used to build a home for another family in need.

Written by children's nonfiction author David Rubel in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. Gorgeous illustrations crafted by Jim LaMarche.

Review
Review, The Horn Book, November/December 2011
"Rubel’s story of compassion hits all the right holiday notes; LaMarche’s lush, warm illustrations of glowing Christmas trees and smiling, caring characters drive home the central message of charity."

Review, School Library Journal, October 1, 2011
"Detailed characterizations and a straightforward tone keep the tender tale from becoming saccharine. LaMarche’s almost impressionistic colored-pencil illustrations put readers in the midst of the action."

Review, Publishers Weekly, September 26, 2011
"Author/historian Rubel’s story of a Depression-era family’s connection to that first tree—and the ripple effect of its bounties—puts the now magnificent symbol in perspective. LaMarche conveys emotional resonance with gauzy, soft-hued paintings of the inspirational proceedings."

“The Carpenter’s Gift captures two of New York City’s greatest traditions ― the Rockefeller Center tree lighting and giving back to people in need― in a way that families can share together all year long.” ― Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York

“The heartwarming tale told in The Carpenter’s Gift brings together—through beautiful illustrations and a moving, multi-generational story—two great traditions: the Rockefeller Center tree and the neighbor-helping-neighbor program of Habitat for Humanity.” —Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States and dedicated Habitat volunteer

“Through my support of Habitat for Humanity, I have seen all of the good that can happen when people work alongside each other to build something better. I see the same thread in The Carpenter’s Gift, a sweet story” about a young boy whose life is changed when new friends help his family build a house — Susan Sarandon, actress

“My dad was a carpenter who built the house we grew up in, and this book brings to mind his gentle nature and generosity.” — Garrison Keillor, storyteller

The Best Presents Are the Ones you Don't Expect
By White Fang
"The Carpenter's Gift - A Christmas Tale About the Rockefeller Center Tree" is a delightful historical fiction children's Christmas picture book with a wonderful message for all. Written by children's historian David Rubel in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, the heartwarming tale combines two wonderful traditions --the Rockefeller Center Tree and the work done through the Habitat for Humanity programs. The author, David Rubel, did research on the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree tradition which had its start in 1931 and wove the historical facts into a touching fictional Christmas story.

The 11 3/4 inch by 8 3/4 inch books has a most wonderful eye catching dust jacket depicting the main character, Henry, holding a handmade Christmas ornament. The book's title on the dust jacket is embossed in red shiny foil and will capture the attention of most children. The illustrator, Jim La Marche, has rendered the historical period and emotions of the characters in what appears to be beautiful pastel drawings. Every other page is a full color full page drawing that accurately conveys the emotions of the characters and meanings of the text.

The story begins at the height of the Great Depression in 1931. Henry lives in an unheated shack with his parents. One day his father borrows a truck and invites Henry to go with him. They drive to an area where many spruce trees are growing. Henry and his father cut down many trees and transport them to New York City where they sell them as Christmas trees. When they had finished selling the trees for the day, there were several large trees left over. Henry's father donates them to the construction workers who were kind enough to let Henry and his father sell trees on their building site. The workers decorate the trees with all sorts of homemade items. In the evening when the street lights came on the tree sparkled like nothing Henry had ever seen. In the beauty of the moment Henry makes a Christmas wish for a real house.

Henry and his father were in for a special Christmas day treat. All the construction workers collected discarded construction lumber and brought it to Henry's house on their day off. There on Christmas Day they construct a new house for Henry and his family. On the day that Henry and his father cut Chritmas trees Henry found a pine cone. He planted it. Just as Henry grew and matured, so did the Pine tree. It became a very stately tree. Henry becomes an old man and the spruce becomes a huge beautiful specimen. One day a man comes by and asks Henry if he would be willing to donate the tree to Rockefeller Center as their annual Christmas tree. At first Henry had difficulty with the idea of parting with his good friend, the spruce tree, which shared much of Henry's life. Henry asked the man what would happen to the tree at the end of the Holiday Season. The man said that it would be cut up and the lumber used to build a home for a family in need. Upon hearing that, Henry knew what he must do. He thought back to the year 1931 and thought to himself, "I have been given so much, I want to give something back." The end of the story shows how that gift kept giving. You will want to read this delightful story and share it with children from Kindergarten to 6th Grade and beyond. Actually adults will also enjoy the story.

At the end of the book the author gives a historical account of the Rockefeller Center's Christmas tree tradition. A brief explanation and history of Habitat for Humanity is also given. Not only is this book a delightful Christmas tale, it also exposes the reader to the wonderful work of Habitat for Humanity and may capture the reader's attention to actually volunteer or contribute to this worthwhile community outreach program of neighbor helping neighbor. Indeed, the best gifts are the ones we don't expect!

THE CARPENTERS GIFT
By susan ferrin
this is really a sweet book. it takes place during the depression and a family who has fallen on hard times. it's about a father who borrows a truck to cut Christmas trees to sell. he has one left over and gives it to the workers at what is now Rockefeller Center. they decorate the tree with bits and pieces and decide to help the little family. this starts a the grand tradition of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. It's about helping one another and giving back to the community. I was unaware that Habitat for Humanity uses the tree to build homes after the holiday season. It is really a sweet book. i especially enjoyed the history behind the tree. the ending was sweet. I buy a Christmas book every year to share with my seven children and my sister. I have a special Christmas Party for my grandchildren and read the book and give each family their own copy. This was the book for this Christmas. I've purchased 10 of them! Read and enjoy and Merry Christmas.

Excellent book for teaching historical fiction
By dsjhoward
I teach third grade and we have been spending some time studying the mood of the Great Depression era using a couple of picture books and photographs from the time period. Just yesterday, I told the children I found this very special book that is perfect for our study AND for this time of year. I cannot emphasize enough how enthralled they were with the story as they listened to me read aloud.

I told the children earlier in the school year that there would be some picture books that I read to them that actually make me cry-that they may see me well up with tears because books can be that powerful. I did not realize THIS book would now become one of "those" books that make me tear up with emotion. When I began to read the page where, as an older man, he has the flashback to 1931, I had to stop in my tracks. The emotion is THAT powerful in the text. A few of the children even welled up with tears. They just "got it".

After the story, we went to the habitat for humanity website and watched the videos related to this book with the illustrator and the family who was helped in 2007. They loved it. What a wonderful discussion we had.

THANK YOU for this beautiful story. I cannot recommend it highly enough and will be using it for YEARS to come!
