Missing answer key kills the usefulness

The lab exercises provided are excellent. The problem is, the lab is full of questions, and there is no answer key provided. So there's no way to validate if you have the correct answer to the questions. This makes it very hard to know if you've actually learned what they are supposed to be teaching you. As such, this is of questionable value.

EH - Hits and Misses

This book is simple and overall entertaining, but misses the mark on about half of the stories. Some were VERY funny - I really enjoyed the missed dog connections, the condom story, and "I love Girl" to name a few. There were several that were really just sad and not even in a darkly funny way. "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus" started with dark humor and ended with simple and depressing bitterness.

Good for some tastes maybe, but not one I'll re-read cover to cover. That being said - I will probably recommend for friends to borrow and read the few that were great,but will not suggest that they purchase the book.

Riffs on Relationships

You may have heard of Simon Rich -- he's a writer for Saturday Night Live (second youngest one ever), and he also frequently writes the Shouts & Murmurs column for The New Yorker. Hell, his Wikipedia page even calls him an "American humorist." Basically, his comedy credentials are well-established, even though dude's not even 30 yet.

In this collection of very short stories, Rich's goofiness is on full display. These 30 stories, each between one and five pages, are about the quirky, often absurd, nature of relationships. Generally, Rich starts with a stereotype or a simple kernel of assumed truth, and riffs it into an entire story. For instance, my favorite story in the collection "Magical Mr. Goat" is about what would happen if a child's "invisible" friend became real and started making uncomfortable advances. When the child fends him off, telling him they should just be friends, and that he'll find someone, the goat exclaims, "That's not true ... You're the only one who can even see me!" THAT's comedy!

Or, another story titled "Sirens of Gowanus" makes fun of dudes who overlook any red flags in a woman when she slows the slightest interest in him. In this case, the woman is a siren who will lure him to her island in the Gowanus Canal, and probably eat him. It had happened before. "You can't judge someone by their past relationships," the guy argues to his buddy. "Like okay, she killed Stanley. But how do you know what was going on between them? You weren't there."

"Center of the Universe" is about God dating a needy woman, who doesn't understand why he can't take time from his job of creating the world to spend more time with her. Yeah, some of these stories may annoy you.

The title story is about one of the last women on Earth, who is in a committed relationship, and who refuses to acknowledge that the President and Brad Pitt requesting "meetings" with her is not because they want to bed her, but only because she's smart and engaging. And she still becomes jealous of one of the other last women on Earth when she thinks the other woman hits on her boyfriend. Really funny!

There are a few duds -- stories in which the cornerstone idea may have just been better as an idea, not a whole story. Rich riffs off the idea that your exgirlfriend's next boyfriend is always evil -- and builds a story about a guy's exgirlfriend dating Hitler. Another story in a similar vein has a guy using a secret government invisibility serum -- and he's supposed to be finding a terrorist, but instead the guy uses his invisibility to stalk his exgirlfriend while she's on a date.

Overall, though, I'd definitely recommend these -- I read them over the course of three weeks or so, just a few here and there. They definitely don't require much mental bandwidth, and for the most part, they're clever, funny, and insightful. You'll definitely do a few "knowing nods," a few chuckles, and a few outright laughs out loud.

FUNNY - genius- creative

I saw Simon Rich at a NY reading and was in tears laughing when Michael Ian Black read the Cave Boy love story. Bought the book and have been equally entertained by the other stories. Impressive range of styles;very creative... solid, witty, and sincere.

Lynn H. Turner teaches in the College of Communication at Marquette University. She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1989. She is the recipient of the Marquette University College of Communication Research Award (1998), the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender’s Outstanding Book Award (1997) and Outstanding Article Award (2000). She is guest editor (with Richard West) for a special issue of the Journal of Family Communication and she serves on the editorial board of several communication journals. She is the Vice-President of Central States Communication Association and Past-President of the Family Division of the National Communication Association. Her current research interests include family communication, gendered communication, and communication and relationships.

Richard L. West, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Emerson College. He received his B.A. And M.A. from Illinois State University and his Ph.D. from Ohio University. Rich has been teaching since 1994. He began teaching communication theory as a graduate student and has taught the class with enrollments spanning 12-200 students!

He is the Immediate Past President of the Eastern Communication Association (ECA). He is also past Director of the Educational Policies Board of the National Communication Association (NCA) where he also served as a member of NCA’s Executive Committee. In 2000 and 2001, Illinois State University and Ohio University respectively recognized him as “Outstanding Alumnus in Communication.” In 2008, ECA honored him as a Research Fellow. West is the co-author of nearly 40 articles, essays, and monographs, a presenter of over 50 professional papers, and co-editor (with Lynn Turner) of The Family Communication Sourcebook (Sage Publications). West is the co-author of four books in multiple editions (Introducing Communication Theory, Perspectives on Family Communication, Understanding Interpersonal Communication, Gender and Communication). He is also a current member of seven editorial boards in communication studies.

West’s research centers upon a few different areas: communication and pedagogy, communication themes in the contemporary family, and culture, identity, and human relationships. He is completing a study (with Lynn Turner) on the communication patterns of children in lesbian- and gay-headed households. He is also currently analyzing data that examines the influence of family life on classroom participation.

West’s expertise has been featured in a number of mediated outlets, including the Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, Toronto Globe and Mail, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, New Hampshire Public Radio, Maine Public Radio, www.cbs.com, among others. In addition to NCA and ECA, West is a member of a number of professional organizations: National Communication Association, American Communication Association, Western States Communication Association, Southern States Communication Association, Central States Communication Association, Eastern Communication Association, and the Religious Communication Association.

NEVER CAME!

I never received my textbook, which put me in a position where I had to purchase it from my school book store for 3 times the amount I would have gotten it on here. I almost missed my first assignment waiting for this book to come that NEVER DID! This was my first amazon experience and I must say it'll definitely be my last

To give details would to be giving spoilers, and I recommend is a novel way ahead of its time. The first time I read it I was about 14, and hardly understood it. The Forgotten Masterpiece

In 1920's Brooklyn, Margie graduates from highschool and is filled with youthful optimism. Determined to rise above the drudgery and poverty of her upbringing, Margie finds a job at a small business nearby and attempts to escape her overbearing mother and her overworked,disillusioned father. Before long, she meets Frankie Malone, a poor Brooklynite like herself, and the two fall headlong into courtship and marriage. Despite differences between her and Frankie, and some difficulties in her relationship with her parents, Margie still hopes that "tomorrow will be better."
Perhaps more than many of her other books, "Tomorrow Will Be Better" showcases Betty Smith's boundless abilities. Although the synopsis of this book may sound unassuming and dull, with Smith's writing the story becomes rich and eye-opening. Never have I found another author who can take an ordinary life and an ordinary situation (such as Margie's) and fill it with such truth and wisdom so that it becomes powerful. Smith has a rare gift for truly putting herself "in her characters' shoes" and seamlessly weaving their differing stories together to form a believable novel. While "Tomorrow Will Be Better" is ultimately a sad story, its sadness is fitting, realistic, and handled extremely will. This story of optimism, dreams, and disillusionment may not be quite the show-stopping masterpiece that "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" is, yet it deserves to be read for its excellent characterization and deep truth.

wonderful in its own right

This book is often compared to Smith's opus "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" and thus many readers miss what is truly great about this book. Whereas "Brooklyn" chronicles Francie's growth within her family from child to woman while weaving in the perspective of her mother, father, aunts, etc., "Tomorrow" is purely about Margie.
"Tomorrow" begins with 16-year-old Margie getting her first job in Brooklyn. It chronicles her courtship and marriage to Frankie, a neighborhood boy with his own family issues i.e. overbearing mother, loud father, myriad sisters. Margie's own parents are none too attentive to their daughter and what she might need, but feel pangs of loss when she decides to get married.
Margie tries to please her mother, mother-in-law, and husband, make ends meet, gets pregnant, and gradually all of these adult conventions that she is supposed to want threaten to destroy her unless she stands up to all of them. Only then will she truly be an adult.
This is an excellent account of a girl becoming a woman and proving it is an internal, not external, journey. The tale is as true today as it was in the 1940s. Female readers will identify with many of the sentiments expressed in this book and find themselves comparing their own lives to it.

Another classic from Betty Smith

There is something about the way Betty Smith writes that just pulls me deep into her life. I say "her life" because we are getting slices of her life in each of her novels. {"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and "Joy in the Morning" are the most directly autobiographical.} Even though her prose are direct and her stories are deceptively simple, I cannot put her books down. I am there with her characters, inside their lives as they are living them.

Like in "Angela's Ashes," the Irish/American impoverished desperation and the raw immediacy of young life are stark and vivid in "Tomorrow will be Better." Parents who never had a chance to develop emotional and physical resources themselves, are brutal toward their children. The children have not lost hope for a better life, but they see people who have given up all around them. As a prejudiced on-looker, I am driven to hope that they get the opportunity to be loved and loving and rise above their parents' frightening existence.

This is just as riveting as the rest of her books. I only wish that there were more!

Denn ... um Pak Nam in der Provinz von Chumphon, einer Perle des l�ndlichen K�stengebietes Sued-Thailands geht ein Axtmoerder um. Der an seinem neuen Hobby auch noch echten Gefallen findet. Und unsere rasende Reporterin Jimm Juree und ihre so herrlich anomale
Familie stecken nat�rlich mittendrin. Und auch die Elemente bedrohen die familiaere Idylle...
Seit Mair - Mutter von Dreien und manchmal etwas "vergesslich" - die Perle des Nordens Chiang Mai hinter sich liess, um nach Jahrzehnten endlich dem Ruf der Liebe zum Vater ihrer Kinder zu folgen, ist nichts mehr wie es war f�r die Familie Juree. Unsere einst so glamour�se Journalistin muss f�r die Chumphon Gazette Skandale ausgraben und ausschlachten und da kommt der englische Schriftsteller Conrad Coralbank gerade recht. Ein Interview-Termin wird angesetzt, um N�heres �ber das Entschwinden der jungen Thai-Gattin des Autors zu erfahren. Nun ist diese allerdings nicht die einzige Frau, die in der "Metropole" Pak Nam unauffindbar scheint. Eine Frau Dr Sumlok, vehemente Verfechterin des Stillens, legte sich mit der schweizer Weltfirma "Medley" - die mit dem (hier blauen) B�ren - wegen skrupelloser Geschaeftemacherei mit Babymilchpulver an. Nachdem sie bei einer der Werbeveranstaltungen zum "Mythos Brust" einen kleinen Skandal verursachte und entfernt wurde, ist sie nicht mehr aufgetaucht. Nur mysteri�se SMSse an ihre Krankenschwester Da, sonst nichts. So macht sich unsere unermuedliche Jimm auch diesen Fall zu eigen, obwohl sie eigentlich neben ihrer Arbeit im armseligen, am Rande des Ruins stehenden Familien-Resort ja auch noch als "Schilder-Doktor" ein gutes Auskommen hat. Sie korrigiert unfreiwillig witzige Ergebnisse von �bersetzungen vom Thai ins Englische. �ber jedem Kapitel findet sich so ein authentisches Beispiel. Doch das Interview mit dem weltberuehmten Autor laotischer Kriminalromane C. C. aka Conrad Coralbank ist nur der Anfang einer kurzen aber st�rmischenBeziehung.
Allerdings bahnt sich in Sued-Thailand in der Weihnachtszeit, die fast immer gleichzeitig schwere Monsune bringt, eine Naturkatastrophe in Form eines Jahrhundertsturmes an. Doch der Axtmoerder hat Jimm gemahnt, mehrmals ernsthaft gewarnt, doch unsere Heldin ist nicht zu bremsen. Mit Hilfe ihrer Geschwister Sissi - Ex-Miss Transgender in einer Midlife Crisis - und Arny - so genannt zu Ehren von Schwarzy - will sie unbedingt hinter das Verschwinden von Dr Sumlok bringen. Und bringt sich damit in t�dliche Gefahr. Doch waehrenddessen bringen Gro�vater Jah und Kumpels einen weitere ganz andere Art von Serient�ter zur Strecke. Das alles klangvoll garniert mit dem Toben der Natur, die f�r alle ihre Weihnachtsueberraschungen bereit h�lt...

Fuer mich ganz klar ein weiterer Treffer des Autors der Dr Siri-Krimis Colin Cotterill, der die von ihm so geliebte "n�rdlichste Provinz Suedthailands" ein weiteres (letztes ?) Mal verewigt. Lesenswert wie immer schon wegen der farbigen Charaktere, der unverhuellten Gesellschaftskritik - diesmal gegen Gro�konzerne des Lebensmittelmarktes - und der gewohnten unerwarteten Wendungen. Ein spannender Krimi, um die Wartezeit bis zum allerneuesten Dr Siri im Original "Six and a Half Deadly Sins" in diesem Mai zu ueberbruecken. Auch kommt am 29.6. noch die deutsche �bersetzung von "Slash and Burn" als "Dr Siri und der explodierende Drache" heraus. Ein interessantes Jahr f�r Fans dieses so vielseitigen Schriftstellers, der durch seinen ganz eigenen Stil und Humor zu fesseln versteht. Von mir eine klare Leseempfehlung f�r alle Krimifans mit Sinn f�r Mr Cotterills englischen Humor.

Book holds pretty well after 80 years

This book, written by historian Eileen Power in 1924, and trying the then novel approach of looking at history through the lives of common people, holds up pretty well. Only the chapter on Marco Polo has aged somewhat (today's historians are much more skeptical on whether Polo even visited China, given the number of inaccuracies in his book; this problem is too complex to be dealt here). The rest of the chapters are very good in bringing to our eyes the lives of people who lived so long ago and in a very different society. I think the best chapter is the first one, about Bodo the frankish peasant. It is the only character on the book that lived before the 1000s, and that's a bit of a problem, as so much of the people in the book are from the late middle ages (but then, I suppose Power has very few sources from the period between the 6th and 10th centuries, with the exception of the carolingian reign, a problem historians still have today). All in all, a good book on medieval everyday life that holds up pretty well.

Bringing the medieval middle class and poor to life

These are genuinely endearing stories of individuals of medieval Europe who were not royalty or aristocracy. Power gleans details of the lives of these people from numerous sources, and, at least in the case of the peasant, Bodo, uses these sources to create a composite character, due to the lack of sufficient historical information about one individual.

Powers describes the lives, homes, general living conditions and practices, the towns and villages, and the working and leasure time of her subjects. With varying degrees of success, Powers is able to bring three-dimensional figures to life, and at the end of this work, one feels like one is leaving new friends.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys cultural history or simply wants a better idea of medieval life.

This is a fun entertaining activity book. My friends and I are in our mid twenties and enjoy pulling this out every now and again. Even comes with a pull out set of beer goggles! The quality is nice and the pages are thick, overall great purchase.

A surprisingly entertaining activity book for grown-up kids

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the entertainment value and high quality of construction of this Color Me Drunk drinking and drawing activity book. For starters, as it states on its cover, it's for "kids 21 and over." Also, it's obviously not a good option for those people who are easily offended by stuff like this (but, really, you wouldn't be here on its product page reading this review if you are, right?)

The cover of the book is very heavy waxy-finish cardstock with fold-ins on both front and back covers. These fold-ins contain a DIY pair of beer goggles that you can cut out and assemble in order to make yourself look like a complete idiot. Not judging...we've all been there.

There are over 120 pages of creative "activities." The following is just a sampling of what is between the covers:

- draw a Picasso-style portrait of a friend
- practice making 'regrettable' tattoos
- renderings of famous paintings are left partially unfinished...you finish them off
- design your own beer labels
- wino bingo
- pickup line survival guide
- draw aliens on a row of urinals
- images of various types of drinks...you have to draw someone bathing, drowning, etc. in the drink
- a few coloring projects including some that are extremely intricate

I bought this activity book for my son to gift to one of his college buddies, a fellow who loves his beer and also likes to doodle. Since the pages of the book are somewhat heavy-weight, markers can be used and shouldn't bleed through.

Pleasantly surprised!

I just got this in the mail today. I bought it for my fiance, i thought it would be a cute, silly gift. It's really cool, he's going to love it and i cant wait to give it to him. There are coloring activities, draw a straight line sober and drunk, color the same picture sober then drunk, draw on pictures of drunk friends faces, doodle bad tattoo ideas when your drunk, create names of new beers by tossing beer caps...It's a pretty thick activity book. I didn't even get to look through it completely because I had to go to work, but what I saw so far is really awesome! Love it! May have to buy some for my friends! : )

About the Author

Abe Zeid (Boston, MA) is a professor of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Northeastern University. He received his PH.D. degree from the University of Akron. Professor Zeid received his B.S. (with highest honor) and M.S. from Cairo University in Egypt. He has received various honors and awards both in Egypt and the United States. He is the recipient of both the Northeastern Excellence in Teaching Award and the SAE Ralph R. Teetor National Educational Award.

Professor Zeid is the author or co-author of many publications in journals and conference proceedings. He is also the author of the most several textbooks including�Mastering SolidWorks, 1/e and Mastering the Internet, XHTML and JavaScript, 2/e (Pearson).
