About the Author
Jonathan Mugan is a research scientist focusing on machine learning. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin. His thesis was centered in developmental robotics, which is an area of research that seeks to understand how robots can learn about the world in the same way that human children do. He received his B.A. in Psychology from Texas A&M University.

An interesting, short read

The Curiosity Cycle is a short, interesting guidebook for parents, teachers and anyone else interested in promoting curiosity. The author, Jonathan Mugan, is a research scientist focusing on machine learning. His doctoral thesis centered on developmental robotics, which aims to understand how robots can learn about the world in the same way that human children do.

As someone with a philosophy undergraduate degree, who also studied a few years of engineering, I found this book to be richly deep in ideas. I found interesting parallels of the ideas in this book with some of the bold thinking that goes on at MIT's Lifelong Kindergarten program, part of MIT's Media Lab.

The preface lays out the reason for the book when it explains, "Curiosity leads to flexible and adaptive thinking. The world is changing fast: Rote memorization and brittle thought are not going to be sufficient, and being flexible and adaptive will be increasingly important as individuals have more power to determine their destiny." For me, as an educator, these words ring definitively true.

Mugan explains how the brain builds tentative understandings of the world that are constantly revised and updated. All that we consider true must be understood as tentatively true, subject to revision. This rings true to my mind.

The structure of this book makes the ideas easily digestible. Short sections of chapters recommend ways to promote curiosity in children: Encourage your child to act in uncertain environments; Encourage your child to predict the future; Encourage your child to articulate the current model.

The book hits in stride in chapter 3, Spinning the Curiosity Cycle. In this chapter Mugan explains how the curiosity cycle builds upon itself. This is chapter where I spent a lot of time thinking about how the minds of children are brought to life in the home and only refined in school. What of all the children whose minds are not brought to life at home? You cannot refine something that does not currently exist.
Where, outside the home, can we also bring children's minds to life? Museums? Libraries? Robotics teams? Where else?

What makes this book valuable is that I very much want to lend it to one of my most thoughtful friends. In the parenting that my friend does, he follows many of the paths suggested by Mugan. He wants his children to be flexible enough in their thinking that they'll succeed in whatever future arrives at their front door. We cannot know what that future will be, but we can know how better to prepare our children for it.

Curious and Curious-er!

The Curiosity Cycle is a fascinating read. It's a parenting book, a thesis, a how-to solutions manual, and also just a fun little topic. Can be devoured in one sitting, but draws you back to flip through again. And the ideas it contains gives me hope for the future of our children! There is so much pressure in education today for kids to fit a formula. To pass a test. To have access to the latest and greatest yet ironically obsolete gadget/technology in the classroom. While books and daydreams and big red foursquare balls gather dust.

What is a parent to do?

Read the Curiosity Cycle and recognize that the atmosphere you create at home (or the museum or park) and the way you talk with and to your children, how you answer their questions or play with them, is the BIGGEST antidote to an educational system that is either failing them due to mediocrity or squashing them with the Latest Trend in hyper-learning. It is also refreshing that the answer has very little to do with plonking children in front of a computer or tv screen!

I disagree with the reviewer who believed this book to be a long rambling opinion with no science behind it. Or something that is accessible only to parent with an IT/AI background. I was a humble Liberal Arts major back in the day. This person might have been hoping for more of a checklist or formula. Do this, IQ will increase x points. But that is not the point of the book.

Mr. Mugan gives loads of real-life examples, conversations, ideas on how to spark Curiosity as a mindset and a joyful habit - many taken from his own family interactions and experiences (experiments?). Verbal games you can play with your child. Beneficial computer games. He explains both the how and the why and give specific ways to teach, ask, foster, and nurture what he refers to as "flexible and adaptive thinking". The type of thinking that will encourage your child to be ahead of the game (or perhaps authoring the game!) that will be required by the Technology that is around the corner.

I especially appreciated his message that a physically active child is a happier, more open to learning child. (My paraphrasing). That getting out to play soccer and enjoy any outdoor fun activities is one important key for growing bodies and minds.

It is likely true that robots are our future. This excellent little book will help you equip your kids with the mindset and success to be their bosses rather than associates. To raise the shepherds, instead of the sheep. To be a leader in whatever field they choose. Or at the very least, kids who become grownups who fully enjoy their vocations and keep inquiring minds!

Skim the "read this" features. Read the free chapter he posted on his website. Then buy a copy for yourself, your best friend, your neighbor. ALL of our children deserve to be prepared for the ongoing technological explosion! To be simply curious kids.

I purchased the book as used, it appeared to be a factory second. The pages were cut a little off square and the top corner had a hole in it. But, because I purchased it for the information, not the appearance, I was very happy with it.

I just received my textbook today & it's exactly the book I needed (required material) for the classes I'm taking. It's about 150 pages of text, diagrams/pictures, & definitions. My only complaint is that it appears to have been somewhat damaged during shipping, having arrived with a small tear or two on the cover. Other than that, great textbook!

They give equal weight to form and meaning and cover nominalizations, agentive forms, comparatives, root and synthetic compounds, as well as more recondite topics such as the abstract noun-forming suffixes -hood, -dom, and -ship, neoclassical compounds, and the morphology of numbers. They examine the relations between orthography and phonological form. While their focus is on contemporary morphology, they trace the history of phenomena wherever doing so helps to understand and explain current form and function. The final part of the book shows how the data assembled within it bear on current theoretical issues and reveal new lines of research. This outstanding book will interest all scholars and students of English and of linguistic morphology more generally.

Laurie Bauer is Professor of Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington. His books include English Word-formation (CUP 1983), Introducing Linguistic Morphology (2nd edn EUP 2003), Morphological Productivity (CUP 2001) and A Glossary of Morphology (EUP 2004). He is one of the editors of the journal Word Structure.

Rochelle Lieber is Professor of Linguistics at the University of New Hampshire and author of Deconstructing Morphology (Chicago 1992), Morphology and Lexical Semantics (CUP 2004), and Introducing Morphology (CUP 2009). She is co-editor with Pavol Stekauer of the Oxford Handbooks of Compounding and Derivational Morphology (OUP 2009 and 2013).

Ingo Plag is Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the Heinrich Heine University, D�sseldorf. Extremely disappointed

I was looking for a book that covered Machine Learning from a practical, hands on perspective, and the "Practical Machine Learning" title certainly looked promising. Unfortunately, the only thing practical I could find in this book was the title.

I read the first five chapters and stopped; it was a huge waste of my time and my money. The book merely scratches the surface of the real topics; on the other hand, it spends a considerable amount of pages covering instructions on how to download and install software packges like Hadoop, R, Julia, etc. Most of the instructions are a poor copy and paste job from the original web sites. I don't need an entire chapter explaining how to install Hadoop - the Apache/Hadoop site has better instructions that are specific to my target operating system.

The illustrations are laughable, to say the least - very naive diagrams that were probably put together by someone who just learned how to use Power Point. They do nothing to explain concepts.

There is also quite a bit of material about ML tools that looks like it was extracted directly from the original web sites. I was looking for concrete problems, formulae, algorithms, code, etc. Couldn't find any.

Bottom line, this is a huge and expensive copy and paste scam. Stay away from it.

Keep looking for something better

NOTE: I haven't bought the book through Amazon. This is a review I made after learning ML using this book as reference.

I used this book to get introduced into the Machine Learning world. If you want a theoric guide, this book is totally recommended. The examples explained here are good enough for a beginner (you will need to look further for more definitions, though) and are pretty clear. Here, I would put 4 stars because it isn't the best guide out there.

Well, now, the reason why I reduced its rating comes in the part of configuration and code. I am using a Linux distro, so some instructions were clear. But the problem is that when configuring Hadoop and Mahout, the instructions were made by different people, so there were unclear or done steps. Ok, this is tolerable, even though it is a bad practice.

But after chapter 5, where the code examples are important, comes the nightmare. I tested the R examples of forests and few issues about importing some required libraries appeared. Ok, no problems here, just download and import it. But when I tried the rest, I only got errors. Reading the Python code, it was referencing local files from the author's computer, using deprecated functions from Scikit-learn and the code was pretty unclear to at least fix the problem. Until now I learned how to use Mahout on Eclipse (an IDE that I despise so much, but at least has a "good" integration with Maven), but still, the project has too many errors that are unclear for me, even looking through another sources. I lost too much time doing this, which I think it is not fair.

So I gave up and tried another books and sources. This book at least give a nice introduction to what kind of problems ML tries to solve, but after that, do not keep reading.

Poor english

This attempts to cover a lot of material. Unfortunately, the english is poor and clunky. It's hard to imagine this was proof read by a native english speaker.
